Artwork Description:
This painting on canvas is not rectangular, but has been cut to the shape of this old oak tree trunk. The dimensions are those of an imaginary rectangle which would enclose the entire image, and the stretcher is constructed so that the image seems to float two inches from the wall upon which it is hung. I was drawn to it as to a piece of sculpture, and was intrigued by the idea of making a painting which would play with two- and three-dimensionality, with the distinction between image and object.
