Artists Describing Their Art:

Kathy Donofrio - My art is a way to organize in a visual form what I see and feel through my mind's eye. ALL PROCEEDS FROM THIS SITE SUPPORT MY OUTDOOR ART INSTALLATION AT BURNING MAN 2014: "A Vortex for Vultures: ALIEN SANCTUARY"...

Timothy King - ARTIST STATEMENT and BIOGRAPHY STATEMENT I find painting goes beyond the notion that painted reality is "nothing but " a precursor to a photographic realism. Painting is a phenomenological experiment. There is a synthesis between the visual and the kinesthetic that forms a powerful third range of human perception. Human space and form are not purely optical manifestations. The painting of mass and line can provoke a muscle sense, a physical ness between viewer and the painted relationships. Hans Hoffman called this "Push-Pull". Matisse referred to this as the convexity of pictorial space. In this "meta-vision" or "minds-eye" the painter is not freed from the experience of perspective and local color and the naturalistic geometry of the objects and scenes. Rather, the painter can be liberated by the experience and knowledge of the defining aspects of human reality. Vision encompasses the obvious factors of sight along with other less obvious paths to sensing reality. Human vision is based on a plasticity of structures that tell us more than what a photograph can convey. The visual system, governed by layers of logical relationships, goes much further than a photo interpretation of reality. Painters like Courbet and Cezanne understood ...

Maria Teresa Fernandes - Admiring Teresa's paintings we are touched by her pictorial sensitivity. Difficult task in light colors (volume and transparencies on a clear basis). Few do it due to the required dedication with pallete knife(no brush). It's painting consacrated by the love to paint. Radha Abramo(Renowned art critique)comments at Solo Exhibition Catalog at SESC Paulista in June 84 -( sent at request and reproduced in one of the pages of this site). ...

Michael Leyton - In his MIT Press book, Symmetry, Causality, Mind (630pages) and his book in Springer-Verlag, A Generative Theory of Shape (550pages), Michael Leyton has elaborated an extensive theory of why art has such a powerful impact on the human mind. This results in an ability to intensify the content of artworks through an increased understanding of compositional organization, that Leyton has provided in his scientific work, which includes his mathematical foundations for geometry. For example, theorems of his, such as the Symmetry-Curvature Duality Theorem, which are now used in over 40 disciplines including many branches of medicine and engineering, also explain the human perceptual response to art-works. Not only has he demonstrated this in his lengthy published analyses of classical and modern artists, but he has also demonstrated that it is possible to surpass the intensity of these artists. This he has done by using the theory developed in his books in the creation of his own artworks - his paintings, his published architectural designs, and the published scores of his musical compositions. The portfolio at the present site is currently under construction. While this is in progress, the reader can gain an extensive introduction to Leyton's artistic ...

Stephanie Hayden - My work varies in style, i try to capture moments of my life on different canvases, from watercolours, acrylics, to montages, sculpture and my photography. Much of my work is dark & disturbing and i can attribute it to the fact that until recently i was registered blind, legally, having been born with dislocated lenses. The more vibrant & colourful works are from my later period after i had surgery to implant interocular lenses, thus i now see the world in a totally different way. This can be seen across my portfolio....

Petros Karystinos - Petros Karystinos was born in Athens in 1954. He studied Scenery at the''School of Cinematography and Television Lykourgou Stavrakou'', Athens and Painting at the''Accademia di belle arti'', Florence (1972-1978). He was awarded with a scholarship from the Institution of National Scholarships (I.K.Y.) for his excellenl work in the art of painting (1990-93). He has been a teacher of fine Arts in secondary education since 1981. He has been a member of the Chamber of Fine Arts in Greece since 1981. ...

Micha Nussinov - Nussinov's Statement Oct 2012 Drifting, being transient, in between various states of body/mind, like when we travel physically and with our imagination, as in a 'waking dream'. My work represents a world of ambiguity and illusion, of recognized and abstracted scenes embedded as a tapestry of matter, illustrating different relationships. Somewhere in the process of creating artworks these worlds are mixed in an harmonious and conflicting manner, representing the contradiction and collision between languages and landscapes. At all times the viewer is challenged to unfold the mystery, to explore and discover. The works of art are created not through a planned process but rather the starting point is an impulse, a visual or musical trigger. These signals lure the me into the unknown territories where my intuition and inner vision leads to spontaneous discoveries. As a teenager my box camera was an excuse to drift away from trouble, to capture in a photo something, that was at the same time ambiguous and exciting. As a cinematographer/ director of documentaries from1976 to1980 I was acknowledged as an acute observer of people and an highly experimental filmmaker. I have been working in various fields of the arts, consistently for the ...

Valentina Vaillant - I started with just a box and a cut out piece for a window. That day 10 years later I realized Art was in my blood. I graduated from New York Academy Of Art. With the certificate in my hands I felt like a official artist. I make sculptures, 2D and 3D. The materials I use are cardboard, fabric, newspaper, beads, wire, glass and clay. I focus on those materials because those are reused recycling thing that shouldnt go to waist. I in the near future will experiment with other things like wood, screws, wall pins, and more. My sculptures majority are about animals. I love animals because theyre smart and independent.they are born knowing how to walk and what theyre able to eat. They care for eachothere, some more than others, but to be compleatly real we are the worst animals of them all. Im absolutely infuriated and hurt because the abuse and meaningless killing, the torture in factory farming and in animal experiment testing. People avoid these things because they only think of themselves and how they dont wanna get hurt from what they bad thing they see instead of helping. Wake up and see the real ...

Riley Young - I started to work with ceramics because it was a medium that held me accountable. There are no shortcuts or cheats in ceramics, it takes time and patience. Ceramics was also a way for me to rethink the everyday, common objects in my life. This began as an obsession with bowls and has since spiraled into anything you can find in a kitchen. I enjoy the fact that everything is made to be touched, loved and eventually broken after years of use. Working primarily in stoneware using clean, simple glazes on functional pieces of pottery I bring into focus the beauty of everyday kitchen objects. Although the materials guide that first encounter, the form follows suit. I create works that fit in the hand perfectly, with an emphasis on touch and feel, enhancing our simple, everyday moments. We all have different relationships with objects that are handmade versus commercially produced. Handmade objects often have a personalized feel, almost as if to be communicating an emotion. This is a collection of various works that showcases a variety of different techniques and mediums. I bring the philosophy of touch and texture from my ceramic works into my two dimensional works such as ...
