  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Paul Orzech - Paul Orzech Sculpture Studio Artist Statement: The heart of my artwork is expressed by the words "Classical form with a modern edge." As an artist, I feel the need to incorporate the classic concepts of the human figure from the Ancient Greek and Italian Renaissance periods, with the more message-oriented elements of today's art. My belief in the beauty and power of the raw human form is exquisitely celebrated in the classical forms of sculpture. The modern themes I treat in my art include feminism; contemporary ideas of spirituality and love; and the all consuming presence time plays in our fast-paced American lives. I feel there is a quiet strength in the combination of established classics and contemporary expression that demonstrates a smooth continuity of social history. ...

Mark Porter - Artist webpage: www.markportersculpture.com Fusing found objects and his own custom-made creations, Mark Porter produces one-of-a-kind pieces that gradually transform themselves -- and the gallery -- as the show progresses. The mechanical-drawings-turned-sculptures in Nurture/Alter mimic the irregularity of human actions and portray narratives through a series of projected images, videos, and fluid expulsions. Porter places his project blueprints next to the sculptures to aid in the understanding of their development, which continues free of his influence for the duration of the exhibition. Check out the show sooner than later, though, so you can observe the counterproductive movements of Porter's work before it slowly self-destructs. - Morgan Phelps...

Jill M. Armstrong - I love the poetic image and a satisfying leap of imagination. My work is based largely on this premise and for my mixed media sculpture, I juxtapose materials and language with loaded objects (with an existing identity or history), much the same way a poet juxtaposes nouns and verbs. My work often references the body, or suggests its presence. I pull other design forms from plants and animals, but the resulting effect is usually seen as surreal, perhaps because most of the work is made from found objects. Even so, many of my more successful works often look like they grew or evolved organically as opposed to being manufactured. I've often thought that my found-object sculptures are like surreal trinkets. They might be evidence of an unknown culture or someone's personal and private collection of emotionally charged objects. I am inspired by the traditions of Surrealism, Dada, and Arte Povera. As well as building visual art works, I also write poetry. I sometimes merge the two of them and they work well together. ...

Beatriz Cunha - The creation of my pieces starts with the observation of the complex relations established between phenomena as diverse as nature's fertility, man made objects or art history. It's an intimate work in search of integrating conflicting forces, ultimately leading to the transmutation of the parts in to a transcending whole. The shape contains in it self the memory of the evolution from one condition to another in a process of transformation that is at the same time natural, personal and cultural. ...

Elena Osterwalder - When people leave their homeland, their home memories freeze in that instant, and without them realizing it both the country and the people progress in divergent directions. The external influences of the new country tend to be assimilated with the old ones and in "The Arts" form a new esthetic with components of both cultures. Years later the yearning for what was left behind takes a hold of them and forces them to look back. In my case using components that have historical and spiritual value in the Mexican tradition, I strive to converge the various cultures that have influenced me and create a 21st century aesthetic.

Stan Harmon - Retirement brought Stan Harmon's passion into the daylight. Finally quitting his "day job", after a career with an environmental water management company, Harmon found himself able to devote more time to artistic endeavors that he had previously crammed into late night hours after everyone else was asleep. Following his dream to learn to blow glass he enrolled at the famous Penland School of Craft in the North Carolina mountains, quickly succumbing to the addictive nature of glass blowing. However, blowing glass requires at least one helper and that wouldn't fit into his new schedule (which was no schedule). Not to mention the constant overhead involved in firing a glass furnace 24/7. While at Penland, Harmon was introduced to the technique of kiln-forming glass which being taught in the next studio. This proved to be the best of both worlds, embracing the serendipity of hot glass creation and the advantages of a flexible schedule because a computer runs the kiln, taking care of the most time consuming aspects of creation. Thus no helper was needed, no outrageous gas bill to stress about, and still reaping the creative opportunities afforded by hot glass. Kiln-formed or fused glass ...

Gary Chris Christopherson - Abstract sculpture by GChris is what he terms "progressive art" and is mission-driven. Progressive art is art with a purpose and artist as advocate. "Art as advocacy; advocacy as art." The call to artists and people generally is to embrace both art and advocacy, use their synergy, and advance progressive values. Advanced by the art are core progressive values - reducing human vulnerability, maximizing human potential, saving our environment, and living at "peace on and with the earth." Underlying it all is the driving desire to "save the world", as best as we as people can. Toward that end, GChris abstract mobiles and stabiles help drive toward a positive progressive vision of the future. They portray strong driving forces -- the desire for knowledge, spirit and justice. High level thought, being, and positive interrelationships are not ends but new foundations from which progress springs. Progressive art supports the continuous striving for absolute knowledge, absolute spirit and perfected being with full recognition this is an inevitable, unending, inspiring and liberating human enterprise. To achieve the vision, they also help explore threats of vulnerability, conflict, and chaos. The mobiles and stabiles address these threats, glean whatever positives they contain, and advocate major progression...

Tzipi Biran - I try to express the feminine experience as a complete individual that is constantly engaged in fulfilling her independence and femininity. Parallel to this, I emphasize the potential of a harmonious and holistic connection within a nourishing, supporting and creative relationship between a couple, a promoting and protective partnership within a spiritual and physical connection. The figures in my works are like the dance of life in which the steps of one are adjacent, connecting, opposing, and supporting to that of others, creating a changing and constant movement. ...

Julia Cake - Julia Cake: Sculptress Born: 1973 in Monaco Currently Living in England Introduction Julia's passion for sculpting began when she was 16 after an accident cut short a holiday from another of her true passions, skiing. She enrolled in the famous Beaux Art academy in France to more fully express what was already an over whelming artistic flair. She decided to move into the three-dimensional world of sculpting. This dynamic gave Julia the release she needed to allow her artistic ideas to flow. These ideas when suppressed in earlier years were sometimes misunderstood by those around her, who would comment that Julia's introspective behavior perhap's required a quite different therapy. Her first ever piece "Trois Elephants" was judged 2nd place at an international exhibition in Cannes. She was just 17 years old. From clay she moved into marble, which soon became the stone for which Julia's passion raged. Born in Monaco and growing up in the French Riviera, Julia was able to drive into Italy to hand pick the most beautiful pieces of naturally formed marble to work with. This is what developed her most sought after talent; the ability to take a stone and transform ...

Lila Goldner - "When faced with a lack of purposeand direction, let us expand capacity of observance, increase possibility of learning and understanding, let us be ready to face the moment when the tasks set before us will be beyond our power.Let us rob the moment of eternity that belong to us and sink into oblivion" ...
