Artists Describing Their Art:
Joan Colbert - While recurring themes and motifs are ever present in both my print work and painting, they are central to the series block prints completed over the last several years. The poet, Wallace Stevens, has been a consistent source of inspiration, but in 2006 the music of Moussorgsky became my muse. The following statement and accompanying images are from this most current series. Pictures at an Exhibition: the print series Pictures at an Exhibition. . . the title says it all. . . and disregarding that, even the most casual exposure to the music of Moussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition can evoke an assortment of moods and images. For years I assumed that somewhere there existed the definitive collection of artwork that was Moussorgsky's inspiration. In reality, only six pieces of Victor Hartmann's work, consisting of architectural drawing and costume design and sketches and watercolors from his travels, can be positively identified. I found the subject matter intriguing, and just a bit odd. This series began as a way for me to visualize and interpret Moussorgsky's music through Hartmann's subject matter, but became an homage to the story itself: the musician and the artist and the artwork that lives on ...

Dana Zivanovits - Dana Zivanovits was born in 1958 in Columbus, Ohio and received his art training from the Columbus College of Art and Design (1978 to 1982). After art school, he went abroad for a year and studied the art of the old masters in London, Paris, Madrid, Rome and Venice. Returning to his studio in Columbus to develop these influences into a new body of work, he then traveled to Mexico and studied the sculpture and painting of that country for an extended period. The unique and vivid colors of Palenque and Vera Cruz intensified his palette. After a period in Ohio, he then moved to Venice Beach, California where the brilliant light of the region reinforced his desire to capture effects of sunlight and atmosphere. Returning to Ohio in 1995, he has continued to paint themes deriving inspiration form sources such as world mythology, classic and B-grade cinema, literature and dreams. However his primary inspiration is direct observation from nature, versus an approach based in art theories or cultural critique. Dana has been widely represented by galleries and exhibition projects including Julie Rico and Mega Boom in Los Angeles, the Venice Art Detour, Around the Coyote Festival in Chicago ...
Roberta Ekman - Roberta Ekman was born in Smithers, BC, Canada. Her family lived in Terrace, BC, but, because at that time there was no hospital in Terrace, her mother had to travel by car on the old rickety roads to Smithers, which had a hospital. She is the second youngest of a family of sixteen children from the same parents, Ted and Mary Johnston who were married in Terrace, BC. All the children were raised in Terrace. In the family there were two sets of twins of which she is one of the youngest set. She graduated from grade 12 at the Skeena High School. She has been drawing since she was very young and had no training, to speak of, in the field of art. She married Carl Ekman and raised five children. They now have seven grandchildren. Most of her life has been spent living in Terrace (except for the times spent in Alberta with her husband and another couple in a joint business venture). In between business ventures, she and her husband live in Terrace on their 35 acre property on the edge of the Kalum River canyon in a big log home which they built themselves with a ...

Susan Leopold - My art tells a nonlinear story that emerges from my dreams and memories. I am drawn to the dynamic between past and present,to what can be seen and what is invisible and the connection of the conscious to the unconscious mind. I work with portraits, old photos, materials, textures and objects that reflect their history. I am attracted to things that are imperfect, tactile, raw edged or torn. I juxtapose disjointed bits and pieces in the way that the mind replays the past. ...
James Parker - Painting, drawing, and to a lesser degree, photography, have been the driving creative force in my life for the past two years. The changing circumstances of life have allowed this to happen, and for this I am quite grateful. Pin and ink, liquid watercolors, acrylics, and the mixing of mediums are used for these works. My art is somewhere between reality and fantasy, with perhaps a unique style (as all are) which is slowly maturing. Much of my work I try to make light, colorful and fun, and even somewhat premitive with a touch of fantasy. Rustic little cabin scenes, and most seascapes perhaps show this best. Landscapes--mountains, trees, ocean and beach scenes, these are my favorite subjects. I prefer to work quite small. Most paintings and drawings come with wooden 11"X14" frames and hand selected colored mattes. These smaller sized works I have found to be excellent for creating pictures that are both colorful enough and detailed enough to carry an "impact". A few fine art's photographs taken back in the late eighties, some of which were published by a national calendar company in 1989 and 90 are also offered here. Those hundreds of hours looking ...
Colette Theriault - New Website: visit www.colettetheriault.com for complete portfolio gallery! Growing up surrounded by the rugged wilderness of Northern Ontario, my love of nature began at an early age. I was inspired by my family who's love of the outdoors manifested itself by countless days of fishing, hunting and camping. Drawn by the beauty and mystery of nature, I was always on the lookout for wildlife, exploring every inch of the forest floor or tree canopy. As a result, I had a need to express this beauty through my drawings and paintings. This undying urge to learn as much as I could about the living world around us later led me to an Honors Bachelor of Science Degree specializing in Biology while I continued to paint and draw part time. My favorite mediums include graphite pencil and watercolor but I also work with acrylic, oil and pastel. I am a self-taught artist and enjoy very much experimenting with different forms of art. My other interests include photography, furniture designing, small mammal husbandry and gardening. To learn how to build your own custom wood frames, visit my woodworking site at:
David Larson Evans - Without question drawing is the heart and soul of art.Becoming a trained draftsman helps to make us capable of mastering any medium.Studying Art for a lifetime ,from New York to Europe. I have many people to thank for helping make it a lifelong quest. In these etchings I am in search of something simple yet hopefully vital, even perhaps elemental(everyone can respond to something elemental). Clarity is important but by adding a hint of mystery i find it makes a more compelling and pleasing work of art. As a Printmaker it is often most difficult to force a piece of flat metal into a negative of an image that matches the original idea (whats in the had). It is a challenge to say the least. My etchings are always limited to 5o prints or less at which time the plates are defaced(keeping the low edtion size). One excitement of being an artist comes with the start of a new piece. Artist can often find inspiration in the other arts. Lately the opera has peaked some interest along with portrait painting in oils.It is wonderful when we find things that move us. The heart controls many ...

Roger Farr - Born in Much Wenlock Shropshire, England 1957.One of 14. My family life and upbringing was in the countryside. Always having a love for wildlife and animals, Archibald Thorburn,Fenwick Landsdowne,Raymond Harris Ching,David Shepherd,Rembrant and Mary Cassat were great influences in the early stages and latter stages of my work, this was complimented with having a grandfather who was an artist and a father who was a gamekeeper. Much of my work was self taught up to the age of 18, this was when my first sale of original paintings took place in Salt Spring Island, Canada.Bought by a collector of wildlife paintings who had noticed my work through a member of my family who lives there. In 1985 I started to work for Shropshire Trust For Nature Conservation, providing illustrations of wildlife subjects for schools and colleges. My work started to be recognised and other opportunities arose including other wildlife and community based projects. Whilst visiting Shropshire Conservation Group one day, David Attenborough commented that I should develop this skill further. So in 1993 after a four year course I obtained a BA(Hons) in Visual Communication, specialising in Illustration at Wolverhampton University. On graduating ...

C. A. Hoffman - For me, my artwork is very personal. It reflects a lot about how I am feeling at any given time and place. I feel that art has to be on this personal level to completely capture how the artist is feeling daily, or trying to convey a certain thought or emotion at that particular moment. We all, at one time or another try to express our thoughts or ideas, whether it is to others or just to ourselves, by words, actions, ideas or pictures. If we are sucessful in this attempt, I think it shows through in our everyday work or art. I believe that one is either born to create art naturally or by learning. For me, I feel that I was born with this wonderful gift, and I try to improve upon it every day. In my photos and art, I hope to show how everyday objects and nature can capture our imaginations and feelings. Sometimes I work with an image to improve it, inhance it, or just to fuel the imagination. I truly hope this shows in all of my art. ...
