Artwork Description:
I am born in Amsterdam and lived during my youth lived along one of the canals in the heart of the city what inspired me to create this work. It shows one of the original canals also used as defense against invaders. It was leading from the port, called Het Y towards the river Amstel. This particular canal could be compared with an industrial estate because of the many small workplaces, horse stables and warehouses and a few houses. In 1850 the city council decided to fill this canal, also because of the stench from the stables. My painting shows how it looked originally with the wooden draw bridges, barges and merchandises along the waterside. For media I used aquarelle paint, ink and color pencils on 150 grams mixed media paper. This work is not framed and is for sale with its certificate of authenticity. On the reverse is my signature, date and title of the painting.
