Steven Derks - Artist Statement: Color field Paintings & Gridscapes My work is best described as accidental beauty or Shibui as the Japanese call it. It's my job to reconstruct those accidents with diverse methods yet a consistent result. The two most important tools in my work are a stick to push and pull paint around, and the sun, to accelerate the drying. The desert is the perfect place to make this work. While the painting is in the sun cracking and crazing may happen. Placing a painting in the sun to dry is similar to putting ceramics in a kiln. I can anticipate the results but I can't always predict what will happen. Picasso used to say, " Painting is stronger than me. It makes me do things I normally wouldn't do". I'm influenced by Turners skies, Rothko's compositions, and Richter's method of pulling paint. STEVEN DERKS ...

Debra Cortese - I believe everything on our planet shares a core energy, a vital life force that animates and supports all growth and renewal. In nature, when this energy is balanced and uninhibited by human interference, the flow is smooth, perfection exists. When I am truly in touch with nature, the feelings that I experience are incredibly magical, full of wonder and joy! I create the nature and plant spirit images to share these feelings, and hopefully to evoke similar feelings in viewers and instill a greater respect for the immense value of our natural environment. My visions of the nature energies evolved over many years of personal experience. I was first aware of them as a child playing in the woods and streams of my family home in the Catskill Mountains of New York. In the early 70's I read about the existence of nature spirits at the Findhorn gardens in Scotland. Fascinated by their stories, I began to experiment with communicating with the devas while gardening and hiking in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. I read voraciously and learned that nature spirits have existed throughout time in almost every culture around the world. I soon realized that my intention was ...

Joanna A. Rytel - Few words about me My journey through the world of art began in Warsaw, Poland in 1965. As a 7 year old I attended an art class with my best friend Marysia. The subject matter might not have been the most ambitious, but the passion for expressing myself through various forms of art remains. Since that first art class I have dipped my fingers in many art forms like oil painting, mixed media, ceramic, mosaic, and photography. I love them all. To me, the most important thing about art is not the form, but the feeling. The feeling of being, of living. 20 years ago I moved to the United States with my daughter Dorota. Soon after arriving here I got involved in the Chicago art scene. In 1991 Gosia Garbalska and I established a non for profit organization called Art Moves International, which was devoted to artist exchange between Eastern Europe and the United States.
