Artists Describing Their Art:

Stephen Mead - In the early 1990's Stephen Mead's poems began appearing in such journals as Onionhead, Bellowing Ark, and Invert, but upon moving to Provincetown, Mass., Stephen decided to concentrate more on visual work. It was in the year 2000, after moving back to NY, that Stephen started seeking publication again for both his writing and his art combined. Since, then, thanks to the wonders of the World Wide Web, his work has appeared internationally both in cyberspace, hard copy, and physical Gallery Space. Often the writing has appeared along side his paintings, and at other times with the text superimposed. In 2004 Stephen began experimenting even more with these poetry/art hybrids creating a series of e books, including the award winning "We Are More Than Our Wounds". From there Stephen began experimenting with his art and poems as films, at first creating slideshows with captions, and then doing his own soundtracks and voice overdubs. These DVDs are available through Indieflix.com In 2006 Stephen put this technology to use releasing a CD of poems set to music "Safe & Other Love Poems" (CDBaby.com), as well as two print editions of his image/art hybrids, "Selected Works" and "Tree ...

Philip Hallawell - I work in various media: oil, watercolor, dry pastels, pen and ink and mixed media. My work is a result of a fragmented view of the world, which gives it a surreal quality. However, my process is not surreal, because I start with a definite theme that I wish to investigate. My main area of interest is people and the human form and I am constantly investigating the physical, intellectual, emotional and spiritual aspects of Man. Over the years I have developed various series, which I revisit periodocally, investigating different aspects. In purely visual terms, what fascinates me is light and form and how I can use diverse visual elements in a complementary way, opposing, for instance, line and form, or rough and smooth textures. The use of diferent materials to achieve diverse expressions, either alone or as mixed media, along with alternating between a graphic representation and a painterly one, or mixing the two, is a very important aspect of the way I materialize my thinking into images. Equally important is the transition from very realistic images to a totally abstract means of expression and alternating between control and expressiveness....

Danny S Christian - Natural light is the most important element in my paintings, whether it comes as early morning light seen through a misty veil, noonday bright sunlight or a late afternoon glows. The beauty of this light may evokes one's feeling toward an otherworldly sense, taking one's spirit and mind toward a deep admiration on this wonderful created nature and adoration toward the Creator of it. After years of searching, I chose watercolor as a medium because it can serve best in expressing what I feel and see in the Nature on a piece of plain paper. Letting its white luminosity shines through layers of transparent color. Giving me lots of freedom to execute the work while 'playing' with the paint, enjoying every stroke and splash I made. I believe that the true measure of success for myself is when my paintings can draw people's heart nearer toward The One who creates all beautiful things we can enjoy in this life. ...

Carlos Pardo - IN SHORT: INSPIRATION: Concious and unconcious perceptions, my background, all circunstances of my life, experiences, past and present, books and newspapers that I read, films, Internet aEUR|feelings, emotions and a fertile imagination sometimes, all them aid to weave a story that will change alongside the execution of a piece. In my opinion our tradition, for thousands of years, the Arts reflect the vision of a trascendent life beyond our tangible life. THEME: Unreal cityscapes let us a special kind of plasticity. The imagination and feelings are active agents that are modeling the perceptible reality. Transcendent and oniric themes entered and remain in my artwork. In my imaginary urban landscapes there are overlaid elements of towns he has visited, some imagined, and maybe dreamed, but all with a unique feminine soul. The Town is a mother, lover, or daughter of the actions, dreams and passions of those who dwell in them or recall them in the distance. It is an idea in which wander those who have been caught up in its infinite labyrinth. PROCESS: I usually have not idea about what I will show on the surface. There is a lack of a script or previous sketch. Forms are born...

Randy Sprout - I grew up in a small town in Northern Iowa, played football, coached the swimming team, and graduated from the University of Iowa with a BA in printmaking studying under Mauricio Lasansky. I then went into the Army and ended up pulling 13 months in Korea on the DMZ. Coming out of Korea I entered UCLA and earned a MA and MFA in printmaking while studying under Jan Stussy and Stanton Mac-Donald Wright. The next year after the funds dried up on my Fulbright Award to Portugal, because of the Angola War, I was lucky to get hired by USC where I taught printmaking as a junior faculty member. I also replaced professors at UCLA when they went on sabaticals, and taught one year at Pierce College. In 1977 I tried Real Estate, you know just for the summer, but by fall I had purchased Century 21 Hollywood Inc. and had a new vocation going. Now 31 years into real estate, I'm coming full circle and starting to paint little quick studies 9X12. I'm using just 1/2 inch brushes and 5 colors. I intentionally limit my time to 2 hours after which I stop and throw ...

Arup Lodh - Recreate the Magic of Enjoying Kolkata - a word woven with mystery. A city with as many unique interpretations as its people. It always remained at the center of our curiosities and discussions. There is one more Kolkata which is being passed over to us through stories and tales from our grandparents aEUR"the yesteryearaEURtms Kolkata. A city, where one could take a tram ride with mere 2 paisa. A raise of one paisa in fare would put the city roads on fire and bring life to a standstill. This very characteristic also gave the city a unique distinction of being the city of revolutionprotest. I Arup Lodh, am a budding artist of todayaEURtms Kolkata. Like many of you, I have also learnt about the yesteryearaEURtms Kolkata through those enchanting endless stories and tales from my family, through books, through journals and write ups from that era. However, a lot has changed from what the city used to be to what it is now. Definitely, one of the notable changes is aEUR" it is no longer the crowned capital of India. But neither it is has dampen the joyous mood of the city nor of its people. The society has ...

Arup Lodh - Robert Reinhardt - Artist Statement My camera lens explores the inspiring and sensitive interconnections between the temporal elements of time and history and their relationship to the changing environment. Several photographic software programs are employed to recreate the original landscape photograph to manipulate the original design of these images. It is the careful observer that begins to discover the delicate objects and surfaces that lie hidden amidst the many layers of images all packaged into one final piece. My intention is to subject the original images to the ravages of time. The rich patinas and the weather worn surfaces magnetically draw me in as I return each image. The images that I chose to include document a specific theme of aEURoeEnd of DaysaEUR. The newly constructed images bring to life a strength that lives on in these landscapes. They seem almost indifferent to the elements that continue to wear at their surfaces and challenge their structural integrity. At the same time, nature is painting an entirely new palette in which they will exist. It is the collision and contrast of that ongoing confrontation that draws me into these landscapes. Robert Reinhardt Restinpixels.us ...

Venczak Marianna - I'm a graphic artist, illustrator and painter since 1993. Since then, I have been a Board of Presidency of the "National association of Lovers of Art". My paintings are often a mix of reality and fantasy - emotional reflections of the world surronding us: sparkles of moments I captured and embraced....

Maryann Burton - Find more of my work at MaryannBurton.com Creating a painting is an adventure that begins with how I perceive the world around me. Inspiration, many times, comes from the play of light, how it creates and dissipates color, and whether it is absorbed or reflected. It is a challenge to my senses and technical skills, expressing these effects on paper. The flow, spontaneity, and feel of painting with watercolor thrills me. The unpredictability of the medium is part of the fun. Whether evoking a feeling or a memory, bringing someone a sense of peace or joy, or reminding them of a familiar time or place, I like to make an emotional connection through my artwork. ...

Vagik Iskandaryan - Every artist dips his brush in his soul, and paints his own nature into his pictures. " Henry Ward Beecher" An artist's painting becomes reare evidence of his inner unseen world. As time progresses that unseen world changes and so does his art. For me, the process of creating vital art is mainly a search and contact with the mystical or it could be the real experience of the mystical world. It is the way of discovering true beauty. The creative process itselfe brings me a sense of fulfillment and that is what I find to be so exciting and enjoyable. An artist should always strive for perfection because the perfection is the atribute of beauty that is the path he has chosen. Nothing should stop him until he can taste the nectar of perfect masterpiece. Then, he can fall in love not only with his art, but also the unseen world from where the real art manifest itself. My paintings are composed of figurative and abstract melodic forms. I called them the inner landscapes The second is pure abstract But the main source of my inspiration, knowledge and experience in art, I have obtained through my wonderful relationship with ...

Jeffrey Dickinson - My work revolves around the figure. Most is drawn directly from a model in a studio setting. Although that sounds simple anyone who has attempted it knows it takes years of practice and effort to produce something worthwhile. I am constantly working towards improving my drawing skills. A few years ago I began doing quick watercolors over my pencil drawings. I like the spontaneity and immediacy achieved in this way. I also paint in oils and acrylics. These paintings are much more planned out and carefully executed. Although the subject matter is often surreal or narrative they still have as there basis a realistically drawn figure. ...

David Rocky Aguirre - ************** To me, Art seems to be a universal language. It can be used to portray something beautiful and uplifting, or to portray a tragedy to motivate and move people to act. To motivate them to help in some way as in Picasso's "Guernica 1937". I have a wide range in creative interests, from most forms of painting- oil to watercolor and on to print forms, sculpture, photography, film and computer animation. Contact me for any creative projects you may have....

Ken Hillberry - In art and in life, dynamics of balance, integrity and tolerant interaction of all elements or participants ought to be see, experienced and maintained. At the same time, the challenge of affecting this balance is creatively encountering all changes and adapt accordingly. For some, the destination or pre-determined outcomes are sought more often than not. Then there are some who savor the journey, thus witnessing and enjoying developments along the way. I fall into the latter category. It's like watching the film develop in a darkroom. the image takes form a little at a time right before my eyes. The creative process, for me, is void of pressure and timeless. The ability and practice and discipline are central in my approach. My creative intent is to engage a viewer in thought and emotion, as well as, with their eyes. Using imagination, retrospect or model, my range of composition can be conceptual, perhaps impressionistic or abstract in application, but always developed to evoke an awareness and appreciation for the relative conditions in life experience and art form as I incisively or playfully interpret my experiences along the way. ...
