  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Leyla Munteanu - ARTIST'S STATEMENT Leyla Munteanu I have always felt a special connection with textural surfaces and the human figure. The beauty and strength in human features was a preferred subject in my work. Now I am focusing on the nostalgic. My love for the human figure has evolved into an interest in what they leave behind. Human marks left on objects and surfaces over time become more important than representation of the people who made the marks. I find my inspiration in immediate surroundings, and I hope that my work will lead the viewer to see the beauty that I see. First impressions are everything. Most often my depictions of those experiences are simply my way of saying "you should see what I saw!" Each piece has special meaning to me, which will not necessarily be the same meaning the viewer may attach to it. Art tells us something about ourselves and my work is the world as I see it, a world that brings back memories. I grew up in Bucharest Romania, a town marked by a long history; every place was worn by time or human nature. I'm still amazed by my memories of these places. All ...

Michelle Scott - Michelle Scott has been a visual artist since the 4th grade when her teacher introduced her to its "magic". She attended American River College in Sacramento and Art Center College of Design in Pasadena majoring in Illustration. Please visit her personal website at:

Debra Lennox - My latest work explores the vibrant use of pure colors & composition to express an intangible, surreal quality of a place. Light, color and form combine to push the figurative subject into the realm of dreams, capturing a moment in between the frenzied pace of modern life, when time slows and we become open to other, magical and spiritual influences on our lives. I am a painter in many mediums * watercolor, acrylic, & oils, and collage. I live in Comptche, California, and travel often for inspiration. I use my architectural degree as a designer and draftsman on the Mendocino Coast. I am a member at the Artists' Co-op of Mendocino, where I sell original works, laser prints and art cards. My work can be viewed at dblennox.com or artgallerymendocino.com...

Maria Teresa Fernandes - Admiring Teresa's paintings we are touched by her pictorial sensitivity. Difficult task in light colors (volume and transparencies on a clear basis). Few do it due to the required dedication with pallete knife(no brush). It's painting consacrated by the love to paint. Radha Abramo(Renowned art critique)comments at Solo Exhibition Catalog at SESC Paulista in June 84 -( sent at request and reproduced in one of the pages of this site). ...

Pim Van Der Wel - Pim van der Wel (1950) combines the art of making watercolours with his work as a business economist. After lessons in all the basic drawing techniques by two Dutch painters in the periods 1980/1987 and 1994/1996 he specialised himself in watercolours. Watercolour offers hardly any limitations, so he can show what he likes and that is light and shadow in dents, creases and gloss etc. His objects are sports (mainly football), cans, torsos, animals (cows, sheep, dogs and chicken). In the last 10 years his work has been shown at (group-)exhibitions in the Netherlands. Some galleries have his works permanently in stock. ...

Jennifer E. Miller - Jennifer E. Miller, with a studio in Hillsborough, NC, has spent 25 years exploring and painting the farms, forests and rivers of her area, working in watercolors and oils.i?1/2 Her style is called plein-air, a French term that literally means i?1/2full airi?1/2, and describes an artisti?1/2s representation of effects of atmosphere and light that cannot be observed in the studio. History and nature are both strong influences in her work. She is a private art teacher. Visit her web site www.waveoverwave.com....

Carol Griffith - My oil paintings are meditations triggered by places or situations in my memory, arrived at through a sort of daydreaming state of mind. I attempt to evoke that mood in the handling of the formal elements of the painting, especially the color and the perspectival point of view. I wish to create both a believable place and the sense of something more significant behind it. The viewer, in contact with the painting and their own memories, may then project into the space and experience the significance that I sensed. This approach has led me to an interest in souvenirs. I see them as an attempt to capture a special place or experience in concrete or symbolic form. By doing paintings of my own remembered places and experiences, I have been following a parallel path. I like the comparison with one purpose of art. I use borders in some of the paintings to function simultaneously as framing devices and as an arena in which to create a dialogue with the internal painting. The borders also extend the meaning of the internal subject. Memories often consist of simultaneous kaleidoscopic vignettes that, in combination, embody the whole, original experience. Each vignette is also ...

Roderick Brown - Roderick (Rod) Brown was born in Western Australia. Rod spent his first 30 years in an arid and remote gold mining town. As a youngster he remembers the great freedom he enjoyed surrounded by the stark but vivid images of the mines and surrounding bush, which he regularly explored. Rod as a child watched his father paint in oils and sketch, in charcoal and ink, portraits of local identities. The early seeds to later pursue art were sown at this time. Rod has enjoyed living with his family in Australia, Europe and the USA. During this time he has visited over 40 countries around the world enriching his life and building on the foundations acquired in his hometown, which was a very multicultural society. Rod decided to explore his artistic leanings taking up oil painting while living in Sydney. At that time Rod was a member of the Castle Hill Art Society and The Hornsby Art Society. Rod took up watercolour painting in the early 1980's, which has been his preferred medium since. Rod has exhibited at many public shows particularly while living in Sydney and has over the years painted commissioned portraits. Rod has paintings in corporate and ...

Charles Rowland - Charles Rowland works in various media, including watercolor, gouache and pen and ink. He has lived in the Columbus, Ohio area since 1970 and currently resides in southern Delaware County A watercolor artist for over 20 years he is both an active artist and teacher. He is past President of the Worthington Area Art League, a signature member of the Ohio Watercolor Society, Central Ohio Watercolor Society, and the Worthington, Ohio and Westerville, Ohio Art Leagues. His work is characterized by strong design and a solid approach to the technical fundamentals of the medium. While avoiding "photorealism", his painting style captures the essence and emotion of the subject while involving the viewers' imagination in its' interpretation. The choice of subject matter is diverse ranging from seascapes and landscapes to still lifes and portraits. An avid sailor, ...

Diana Millerpierce - I am attracted to scenes involving strong clear light, that will cast strong shadows for subject matter. I look for a composition of strong dark and light patterns to create a dynamic tension and energy in a painting. My work is drawn from realism of nature, but the overall pattern creates a great deal of abstraction. Color is planned to enhance the tensions and drama in my overall compositions. I hope my paintings help the viewer arrive at a different perspective of the world and its beauty....

Chuka Machie - I am a self taught artist from eastern part of Nigeria in West Africa. My style of art work is not consistent since it fluctuates between realism and aabtract. They depict different level of life and forms though I prefer to work mostly on theme that portrays African(predominantly Nigerian)way of life and culture....

Eleanor Hartwell - I am a self taught artist. I like to explore in all types of media, and try out a variety of style and type of work. I have a lot of fun doing what I do. I have done a series of drawings for a book on Harehunting, which will be published in the spring of 2002. "One Day at a Time" In October of 2002, New Hampshire Public Radio will be offering a "gift" of a mug to thier fall fund drive donaters, featuring my painting done specially for this project. ...

Stephanie Hayden - My work varies in style, i try to capture moments of my life on different canvases, from watercolours, acrylics, to montages, sculpture and my photography. Much of my work is dark & disturbing and i can attribute it to the fact that until recently i was registered blind, legally, having been born with dislocated lenses. The more vibrant & colourful works are from my later period after i had surgery to implant interocular lenses, thus i now see the world in a totally different way. This can be seen across my portfolio....
