AI_NORN, the AI-powered robot that paints. AI_NORN uses paints, canvases, and brushes, just like the rest of us, to create its works of art. AI_NORN was born in 2019 in our apartment as a hobby and it has become our passion.

Technology
AI_NORN style of painting was designed as something distant from photographic repeating. We name it neuroimpressionism. The idea of neuroimpressionism is to underline the main thing of a picture through artificial intelligence perception, not a human perception - mood, energy, and reflect them on canvas with brushstroke form and colors.

It would be the first of its kind in the market at the time - a robot that was painting pictures in a neuroimpressionism style. Its capable of creating a painting on a canvas using traditional equipment like brushes and paint.

Software
The main part of the project is our program that helps a human artist to express his idea in colors by transforming them into robot movements. The program gets an image as an input it can be a photograph or any other digital image, analyzes colors and shapes, puts them into strokes, mixes paints on their own, and applies them to the canvas in different techniques with a robotic arm and a platform.

Hardware
AI_NORN works with a small robotic arm, a homemade robotic platform on Arduino, and a webcam for computer vision.
The robotic arm is standard, you can find it and buy it easily. AI_NORN can work with almost any robotic arms with an open API.
The robotic platform is made in order to be able to paint much larger paintings than the working area of the robotic arm.
