perhaps you are wondering who or what i sound like... well this is a link to some radio which we done a couple or weeks ago here in wales uk......
http://www.culturecolony.com/videos?id=6967

these art chats have fortunately been archived... so catch up on the arts scene where dylan thomas richard burton anthony hopkins zeta jones charollet church plus all the rest..

may 2006
its been a very busy time.. recently, well last year got back into film and then combined this media with the painting to produce animation.. the results have been quite successful... hopefully these results will be seen in cardiff/wales in the near future... the venice bienalle will be coming around again for some very fortunate artists in wales... my idea of paintings and mirrors will hopefully see the light of day as something more than a marquet at an international venue.....

may 2005
brand new website detailing all that new info, exhibition details and just how do you get out those stubben stains...

oct 2004...
during the last months we have been opening the studio here in south wales uk... it will hopefully give the opportunity to people to view and see contemporary art in construction... by doing this i hope we can start to create the new audience in wales that we need here to make these large art projects survive...

last
have i got anything to say, is that what art is? somebody saying something.. well no i hear you say, art isn't just about talking its about producing the object of imagination.. well if that is the case then why do so many people who show work support the show with an intelectual crutch that explains what the person intended as a thought behind the work.. arhh.. i have sort of helped them out here by saying it in this clear way, but i would add why is it important to contribute a reason for the work and not let the viewer come to their own conclusion.. this case of art being changed into a representation of illustration seems to me to be more about a curator finding a reason to exist than about the art on show.. if we follow this subjective idea back through time i believe we will come to the point when duchamp exhibited a pound of butter stabled between two pieces of quarter inch steel and the sports correspondant at the time was told to write about art for their newspaper...
what the fuk do i know though, eh! well i'll tell you what i have found out and that this is a world where the bad get all the attention, where having your name on a pair of socks is considered success and that the majority of wales/uk could give a ants arse about art and thats not sad that just how it is... people can get involved in art and the intellectual approach doesn't need to be required... i had to find my own questions to get me into understanding art and i readly give these as examples when talking and writting about the work.. ask simple questions about what you are looking at, is this artist left or right handed? is it a man or a women? these simple questions let you think and look for the clues into the work... art can be entertaining and once in you'll begin to see it everywhere...

Exhibition Press Release

Neale Howells
—American Mama Gun Run

Part 1, John Martin Gallery London 3 – 25 Feb 2012

Part 2, Edward Cutler Gallery Milan 9 Feb – 4 Mar 2012

John Martin Gallery, London and Edward Cutler, Milan are delighted to present the first major show of Welsh artist Neale Howells for nearly four years. The exhibition is divided into two parts taking place in Milan and London during February with works also being previewed at Arte Fiera Bologna at the end of January. The private view in London will be on Thursday 3 February 6 – 8pm and the private in Milan will take place on Thursday 9 February, 6-9pm.

Howells’s paintings absorb the seemingly relentless stream of information which crowd our daily lives sourced from television, radio, the internet and print media. Words, phrases and images are harvested, almost arbitrarily and repositioned on found panels and pieces of wood: tiny details and passages of text which are continually developed, obliterated and enlarged.

“... the smallest part becomes the most important. You have to believe in the work through every part of it so it's identity runs through every line like DNA”.

His obsessive, time-consuming process of painting is coupled with a desire to overwhelm and give the viewer a near-cinematic experience through scale, achieved in such monumental works as Captain America vs The Rest of the Worldwhich spans nearly five metres in length.

The starting point for much of Howells’s work is the graphic language of 1950's Americana, filtered through elements of abstract expressionism, street art, graffiti and pop art. However the intense re-working and continual process of creation and obliteration negates the intentional anachronisms of his work. He is obliterating the chronology of art history in the same way he erases the texts of which the paintings are composed. Indeed, the finished works often suggest that the artist is searching back further to find an older classical painting standard, finding the rhythms of harmony in the order and placement of colours, images and words.
