Born: Brooklyn; New York.

Raised:New Haven; Connecticut.

"I am completely self-taught. & although I work in all mediums, I consider myself first & foremost a Painter. My subject matter is everything having to do with life. Love, hate, joy, fear, pain, happiness, sorrow, & everything in between. I Paint what others can't or won't. I believe that ideas are only as good as the content that embodies them. I Paint the truth. I have no time to waste. Neither the viewers, nor mine. I leave that to the pretenders & posers, content on ideas without substance & clean hands. Painting should be as real as the Paint on the canvas, or piece of paper; or what have you. I do not mean that it has to be figurative, but that it should carry the weight & conviction of a soul. Then if it is any good, the viewer will either love it, or hate it. & this is what I am after."

featuring an array of art mediums by contemporary artists.


New York CityThe Mattatuck Museum is pleased to announce a donation of contemporary art by collectors Benjamin Ortiz and Victor Torchia, Jr. Given at the time that Marie Galbraith is stepping down as director of the museum and moving to Director of Education and Public Programming, the donation reflects Maries outreach to the various communities that make up our audiences.



The gift of paintings, sculpture and works on paper by 31 artists celebrates each year of Maries tenure. It includes works by artists of diverse backgrounds, some well-known and others just emerging. Galbraith, who is stepping down in February to work on the more creative aspects of museum programming and education, is delighted with the gift which represents multicultural diversity in both its creators and its subjects.



Eva Fuka - ReflectionsThe donation contains a variety of art forms including painting, photography, watercolors, etchings and mixed media. It represents such movements as figurative realism, feminist art, social commentary, color and abstract art. Included in the donated is a 1955 black-and-white photograph, Grand Central Station, by Larry Silver, Antonio Frasconis colorful woodcut Sioux Chief, 1971, and a mixed media work, Esperanza, 1995, by Yolanda Vasquez Petrocelli along Antonio Frasconi - Sioux Chiefwith Imna Arroyo, Milton Bond, Evelyn Longman Batchelder, Paul Camacho, Ann Chernow, Alberta Cifolelli, Colleen Coleman, Pedro Martin DeClet, Carlos Hernandez Chaves, Eva Fuka, Nathaniel. W. Gibbons, Karin Hillmer, Nash Hyon, Andy Jones, Ben Johnson, Nancy Lasar, Ernest Lopez, Osvaldo Lugo, Francis Luis Mora, Deborah Dancy, Jan Murdock, Robert Natkin, Robert Andrew Parker, Longworth Nicholas Powers, Julia Milch Singer, Adam Waimon, Deborah Weiss and Joan Brinton Wheeler.



This contribution by Benjamin Ortiz and Victor Torchia Jr. is important as it significantly increases the museums holdings in 20th and 21st century art. Their desire to share their remarkable collection reflects their philosophy that art reflects our culture and that art can inspire us. Additionally, this gift can be used for teaching as well as the enjoyment of our audiences.

Some artists, like Pedro Martin De Clet, have chosen to create political statements that suggest a new-found kinship with oppressed cultural groups & the positive & affirming act of presenting a political statement for the consideration of viewers. De Clet's 'Portrait de Genocide', is a powerful media-related work which chronicles the U.S. governments genocide of Native American Indians. The artist has lain out a loose grid of some fifty photocopied images (the number corresponding to the number of states in our country) made from archival photographs of famous Indian chiefs & related imagery. Atop this strong, historical gallery of Indian history, the artist has painted a bold, blood-red, graphic image suggestive of rock hieroglyphs found in Indian areas of the Southwest. This blood-red colored sign seems to be a target & a tribute, a marker of the passing of these great leaders. De Clet aligns himself with those that would remind us of these ugly scars upon our nation's history. Make no mistake - it is not simply an artwork of rebellion one sees here but a truth laid bare - & some artists have traditionally used their art to comment on society & its ills. This is a positive act of growth & concern, a connecting to something greater than one's immediate situation.
