Artwork Description:

THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS, from The Permanent Collection of Liturgical Art at THE PHILADELPHIA EPISCOPAL CATHEDRAL, 38th and Ludlow Streets, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. This work is a mixed media, wall assemblage executed on stretched canvas. In the Stations of the Cross, Christ falls three times, and each separate fall is represented in a station. I elected to represent these three falls through roses. STATION NUMBER THREE is entitled, CHRIST FALLS THE FIRST TIME, and like a delicate rose broken by the weight of society and its laws, Christ collapsed under the weight of the tree, or cross, that he is carrying. For His first fall, I treated a silk rose with various resins and polymers to make it archival. I next cut it in half and sewed the two pieces onto gold leaf, which had already been overlaid onto the acrylic painted and textured canvas. I chose to cover the stretched canvas on this STATION with a mixture of acrylic paint, gloss acrylic gel, and actual marigold flowers that had been dried and crumbled. I used this particular flower because of its symbolism. In European and American folklore, the marigold, which is also called both Bride of the Sun and Marys gold, represents justice and healing. The 24-karat gold leaf was employed to recall one of the Magi gifts. Moreover, the gold area is shaped into square, which represents both the EARTH, as well as the four directions of North, East, South, and West. The earths surface is where Christ landed when he fell. MEDIA includes acrylic gloss gel acrylic paint gold leaf silk plastic heavy duty threads dried and cut marigold flowers and stretched canvas on wood.
