Artwork Description:
The mosaic is named after the celebrated Italian city whose private homes and public buildings are embellished by beautifully tiled floors.
Soalhat combined numerous patterns to complete this mosaic, including the cross which is a recurrent motif in Venetian floors. Surrounding the cross, a repeating pattern is composed of both old and new materials and consists of primarily green and gold tiles.
Whereas the former tiles originate from a console constructed in the elaborate Napoleon III style, the latter are adorned by contemporary gold leaf from the island of Murano, located just north of Venice.
