Artwork Description:
This painting came about as a result of an unusual cold snap in a Kerry winter. The location is the Pocket, a spectacular mountain amphitheatre in the lea of the third highest mountain peak in Kerry, Mullaghanattin, at the edge of the MacGillicuddy Reeks in County Kerry. There was a rare settling of snow in this usually mild area.
A neighbouring farmer had cut his turf but not yet gathered it. The painting encourages the viewer to ask the question as to why the turf has not been gathered in for winter fuel. The turf stacks lead the eye to the distant dramatic amphitheatre, along with the line of evergreens in the background. Life carries on around the ungathered stacks, with animal tracks in the snow and two magpies flying into the painting from the left.
The covering of snow has been beautifully rendered with luminosity and the light airy impression of freshly fallen snow. We know that the experience is going to be fleeting with the snow already starting to melt in the winter sun.
