Artwork Description:
The content of this piece was largely inspired by the recent increase in discrimination against the queer community in America, specifically the mass shooting atClub Qin Colorado in November 2022 where five people died and 25 others were injured. The Statue of David is physically altered to resemble one of the victims, Daniel Aston, whom I felt an immediate and very strong connection to as another transgender man. The name is inspired by the protest songMississippi Goddamby Nina Simone. I specifically chose this song to reference because of how thinly veiled the similarities are between the targeting of black and queer people in America, currently as well as historically. Also included in the piece is the background ofThe Creation of Adam , with no Adam figure or God figure present. To me, this represents the question of what our culture would be like if our standards weren t built from Western European idealist art history, setting the foundation for the modern-day rigid definitions of what classifies, defines and separates a man from a woman in American society.
