Artwork Description:
The Nightmare is a painting inspired by the painting The Nightmare by Henry Fuseli. The painting is a modern and contemporary reinterpretation of the painting The Nightmare by Henry Fuseli. It shows a woman in deep sleep with her arms retracted below her head and with a demonic and apelike incubus crouched behind her back caressing her shoulder and hair. The painting s dreamlike and haunting erotic evocation of infatuation and obsession.
Interpretations vary. The canvas seems to portray simultaneously a dreaming woman and the content of her nightmare. The incubus and horse s head refer to contemporary belief and folklore about nightmares but have been ascribed to more specific meanings by some theorists. Contemporary critics were taken aback by the overt sexuality of the painting since interpreted by some scholars as anticipating Jungian ideas about the unconscious. The painting reveals a situation in which any type of nocturnal attack or nightmare may be confused with a night terror.
