Artwork Description:
This exquisite etching was enhanced with gouache and watercolors infused with mica. It is a one of a kind work that combines the genres of printmaking and painting. The price includes artwork in an archival mat, a sixteen inch by twelve inch wide frame, all handling costs, all archival packing materials with cardboard shipment box, and a Certificate of Authenticity. The work is also wired and ready to hang, and the framing includes a brown craft paper backing. A wall hook and nail are included.
The initial etching was executed on nine individual zinc plates that measured three inches high by two inches wide, 2.54cm by 12.7cm. All etching plates were placed on the printing press bed together in three rows of three plates. The specifics of my plate formation design was to counterbalance the square areas within the image itself, as well as to elongate the veiled female figure, which is the Guardian of the family tomb of LAGARDE GUERET in the Paris cemetery of Pere Lachaise. NOTE-The artist Eugene Paul Benet designed this tomb, which I photographed in 1987 and next adapted for etching via three original drawings. The overall size of the etched image is 6.5 inches wide by 9.5 inches high. The paper, RivesBFK white, measures 11 inches wide by 15 inches high, 28cm x 38cm. I hand printed the work on a Brand industrial press at The Center for Works on Paper, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. The visual motif in this unique work underscores the sacred geometry within the tomb itself, as well as its relationship to the rectangular parameters within the architectural precincts of the mausoleum. The forms also recall the shapes of books, which relate to the impressive literary collection of the family. NOTE The collection of Jeanne Lagarde Gueret was donated to the National Archives in Paris in 1936. I find it quite alluring that most of the books bear the following book cover insert-- Odiate e aspettate... bookplate Jeanne Lagarde Gueret, which refers to the motto of Catherine de Medici, from Bibliothèque nationale de France.
