Artwork Description:
at the time i was working on these paintings i was busying myself with the translation of texts, commentaries and poems on 16th century portuguese cartography and had started to read umberto eco's the island of the day before.
this poem by sophia de mello breyner andresen from her book navegaes was also very present in my mind:
() The wise men had concluded
That only that which was known could be:
The unnavigable alone lay ahead, Tremulous,
Beneath the clamour of an inhospitable sun,
A script from other stars yet to be deciphered.
Within the silences of nebulous zones
The compass groped for spaces.
Then the luminous coasts appeared;
Silences and palm-tree groves, a fiery breeze,
And the radiance of the visible, face to face.
