The woman in the painting is shown dressed in a blue shall, she looks surprised and lost in thought like someone just called to her, and her mind has not been fully released from the story in the book. Though she looks aware of herself, her mind is trapped within the story and her expression somehow transposes her thoughts through the canvas.
