Artist Statement

Alexandra Heyes is an established New Zealand painter specializing in figurative painting and portraiture, with work in collections in the UK, Europe, USA, Australia and New Zealand. Capturing the natural personality and the essence of her subjects with preliminary charcoal drawings she then prepares many of her own paints and mediums to achieve the beautiful hues and textures which are a signature of her painting.
Whilst living in Provence Heyes exhibited in Antibe, France in 1994 and was also invited to exhibit
at the Hotel de Paris in Monte Carlo. After returning to New Zealand and establishing her Galerie she also engaged in conservation framing and gilding for Francis Hodgkins watercolours. Heyes has continued to paint, specialising in portraiture, to tutor and exhibit.
In 2008 she travelled to France again painting a portrait commission in Paris. Her portrait work and figurative painting have become highly sought after and in 2013 she was commissioned to paint a portrait of Bill Buckley Bill was nominated for New Zealander’ of the year
In 2016-2018 Alex was commissioned by the Heritage Trust to restore a mural attributed to Reuban Watts in Takapuna. This was a very delicate restoration project that involved carefully repainting areas of the mural in tempera on water damaged surfaces, whilst retaining the original integrity of the work using tempera paint which was hand-ground and made freshly on site. In 2019 Heyes and her partner were given permission to paint in the Alhambra Generalife,
in Granada, Spain and they are hoping to run a painters workshop there in the future. In the meantime, they also hope to run an Artists workshop in the Hawkes Bay.
Heyes is represented by the following galleries as well as co-directing an artists retreat and workshops in Andalucía, Spain.
