The Artist respects the vibrant colors found in nature and embodies them on her canvas.
Michelle Mendez prefers working from life because the Artist enjoys the reciprocity of engaging herself with the elements of nature. Many of the small oils were done en plein air, whereas larger works were built up in the studio from oil and drawing studies, photographs and imagination.
The Artist studied with landscape painters John Moore, James Weeks, Harriet Shorr and George Nicks at Boston University; Gillian Pederson Craig and Gabriel Laderman in New York; and Julia Wroughton in Scotland.
Ms. Mendez has traveled to the Isle of Iona and Mull in Scotland, England, Paris and parts of China and around New England to sketch and paint landscape, animals and the people. Formerly a resident of Boston, she has painted many cityscapes from rooftops at Boston University and the Fort Point Artists Community.
