Artwork Description:

This intaglio and drypoint etching is the first of four editions. The DiFalco original, hand-pulled print was executed in black, oil based etching ink on RivesBFK white paper, all from France. The work was the second in a series that was inspired by the German film entitled METROPOLIS. This 1927 silent film by Fritz Lang was one of the finest examples of German Expressionist cinema. Moreover, it contributed new levels of fine art to the future and history of film making. This marathon cinematic work, which blends science fiction with religion and politics, takes place in the future year of 2026 C. E. and examines a megalithic urban scenario ruled by billionaires, industrialists, and corporate kings. The amazing sets were heavily influenced by the visual artistic movements of Futurism, Cubism, and Bauhaus. The script, written by Lang and his wife, Thea von Harbou, starred Gustav Frohlich, Brigitte Helm, Rudolf Klein-Rogge, and Alfred Abel. The ground breaking special effects were unlike any previously shown in a film. DiFalco’s etching is executed on two separate zinc plates, each measuring four inches wide by five inches high, or 10.160 cm by 12.700cm. Therefore, the overall visual image measures eight inches wide by five inches high, or 20.320 cm by 12.700cm wide. The paper size is about twelve inches by ten inches, or 30.480cm by 25.400cm. Five separate nitric acid baths were required for the final etched design. This work was hand printed by the artist in 2017 at The Center for Works on Paper in Philadelphia, which is part of The Fleisher Art Memorial OPEN STUDIO IN PRINTMAKING. This is a print from the FIRST Edition of Four Editions, and each intimate edition is limited to only five prints and is executed in different colors of ink on different papers. THIS WORK OF FINE ART IS SHIPPED TO THE COLLECTOR WITHOUT A FRAME OR MAT. THE SHIPMENT MATERIALS ARE HEAVY WEIGHT AND PROFESSIONAL. THE ETCHING IS FIRST WRAPPED IN ARCHIVAL GLASSINE AND THEN PLACED BETWEEN TWO ACID FREE BOARDS. THIS IS THEN PLACED IN A PROFESSIONAL CARDBOARD SHIPMENT BOX, WHICH IS PACKED WITH BUBBLE WRAP. THE SHIPMENT PRICE IS ADDED TO THE SALE PRICE.
