Artwork Description:

This intimate hand-printed etching, executed on a Charles Brand hand build press that was manufactured in New York City, incorporates the studio techniques of intaglio, aquatint, and Chine colleChinese pasting. I blended Parisian, oil base etching inksCharbonnel brandand RivesBFK white etching paper. The process of Chine colle required Thai mulberry bark paper infused with kozo threadsfrom Japan , which was hand treated by the artist with methyl cellulose. The size of the zinc plate measured five inches wide by seven inches widethe actual print size is about ten by eleven inches, and the frame size measures about fourteen inches high by eleven inches wide35.56 cm by 27.94 cm. The scene was adapted from a photograph I shot in Madrid when I lived there in the spring of 1990. The neighborhood at that time had just begun to gentrify, but was still noted for its red light bars. The most beautiful Baroque church in MadridSaint Anthony of the Immigrantswas located across from my hostal,Ia fifth-story walk-upwith cold water. My view was a well-like tiny courtyard covered with dead birds. I fell in love with the city and enjoyed the people in my neighborhood. The Theater LARA was abandoned in 1990, but has since been renovated in its Baroque style. The price of this etching includes a frame, mat, shipment box, handling, transportation costs to collector, and a Certificate of Authenticity. The artist hand printed this first edition of four editions at The CENTER FOR WORKS ON PAPER, FLEISHER ART MEMORIAL S OPEN STUDIO IN PRINTMAKING, IN PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, USA. Fleisher Art is associated with the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and the artist has served as an Artist s Mentor there for eleven years. The remaining three editions will all be limited to five etchings.
