Artwork Description:

THE SKY BLEEDS AT PUIVERT CASTLE FOR LA LOBA AND THE LADY OF THE LAKE. NOTE Print 3 of 10, pictured here, sold in June of 2015. Seven other closely identical prints are available for viewing and are still available. The image in my etching, from my series entitled MYSTERIOUS PLACES and SACRED SPACES, is appropriated from a color photograph I shot in 1987 in the area of Southern France that is known for its Cathar History. The printmaking techniques employed include intaglio, aquatint, Chine colle, and drypoint. This limited edition of only ten prints is executed in an oil based French, ink, Charbonnel Brand. The paper I used was RivesBFK white. The red sky was achieved via the Chine colle process, pronounced sheen kolay, by integrating a piece of mulberry bark paper from Thailand onto the work. Size of the image is 5 inches high by 7 inches wide, or 13 cm x 18 cm. The print size is eleven inches wide by ten inches high, or 28 cm x 26 cm. PUIVERT is in Occitania, which is the name given to the area in Southern France where Occitan was traditionally the first language spoken. This magical area was noted for its Troubadours, Chivalry, Poetry, Ladies, Knights it encompasses cities like Toulouse, Montpellier, Carcassonne, and Narbonne. This is a Cathar Castle at Puivert. The Cathars were a Christian-based religious community active in Europe and especially in the area known as Catalonia in the mid 12th century. They believed that God had only created spiritual perfection and eternity, not the material world... which they viewed as evil. Many led austere lives as celibate vegetarians. The Cathar clergy were called Perfects. These men and women were thought be masters of alchemy and magic. Unfortunately, their beliefs earned them the wrath of the Pope, the Vatican, the Roman Catholic Church, and the French king in Paris. The Cathars were massacred and burned at the stake as heretics. It is rumored that a few Cathar leaders hid their treasures and secret writings in the surrounding caves and mountains before their extermination. This castle, located near a lake, was a major center for troubadours Legends abound here, including one about La Loba, the Shewolf of cabaret, as well as a story of a ghost called The White Lady or The Lady of the Lake. The work was hand printed and published by the artist at The Center for Works on Paper in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Please note that this etching is shipped to the collector without a frame or mat. This keeps the price low and allows the collector personal choice in mat selection and framing. A sturdy cardboard box is employed for shipping the work. The etching is first wrapped in two layers of acid free glassine and then placed between two archival boards. This is next placed into the shipping carton and securely packed with bubble wrap. The Absolute Arts Dot Com price includes all handling costs, shipment supplies, and the coast of the shipment box. Mailing costs are added.
