Artists Describing Their Art:

Alan Soffer - Alan Soffer began studying sculpture and clay in 1973 transitioning to abstract painting in 1985, through a breakthrough program at Bennington College with Sandy Stone. His abstractions have been in the pursuit of the unknown, unique, and personal depths of the unconscious. Rather than confining his energies to a single medium, he sensitively chooses materials that accommodate the concepts at hand. Early constructions were in clay and found objects, then discovering printmaking and photography, which he learned on his own. Finally, focusing on painting with acrylic, oil, and wax. Encaustics allowed him to marry a sculptural component to his painterly approach, following his studies at Ringling School in 1998. The hot, pigmented wax's inherent translucency perfectly supports his vocabulary for expressing space from the microscopic to the galactic. Whatever the direction, the work is always influenced by Joseph Campbell, the noted mythologist, who Soffer considers his mentor. He organized the first national encaustic conference in the US in 2005 and continues teaching encaustic technique as well as abstract painting primarily through workshops. Major one person shows have been presented at: DCCA, Wilmington DE; Borowsky Gallery, Phila.; Rosenfeld Gallery, Phila.; Widener U., Chester PA; Atlantic City Art Center; Robert Roman ...

Sarah Longlands - I trained at Bristol and Manchester, where I gained a BA (hons) and completed my post-graduate studies at University College London (Slade School of Art). In the words of one of my collectors: "Ostensibly realistic, her work goes beyond this to explore the nature of reality, and of time and space. The artworks are refined, emphasizing her knowledge and meticulousness in the chosen medium. But her art is not just representational: it also has a rare imaginative flair. The objects are changed into something which is beyond the original and which creates a kind of parallel ideal artistic reality. If this sounds a little like surrealism, then maybe that is not so far from the truth, but the work is subtler than that." Having previously exhibited in many exhibitions in both the United Kingdom and France, Gold Fish Galleries in Sarasota, Florida then in the Lincoln Centre in New York and done many commissions for people both in London, the provinces but also in The United States, I finished a commission from Cunard Line in 2003, through the art consultants "Onderneming & Kunst" to do six oil paintings for the penthouses on board the new "Queen Mary 2", launched in ...

John Hogan - Drawing and painting as a young boy, I maintained my love for visual art making throughout a varied career. Initialy trained and practiced as a graphic artistIllustrator. Producing work for national and international clients through my agent. Briefly employed as a qualified mental health nurse. Painting full time until the present. I have exhibited widely. My work is held in public, and private collections. I consider myself a painter of the human condition, my work is predominately figuritive although my practice can be decribed as eclectic, as I tend to position myself within a wide stylistic paradigm, continousely searching for a visual language that fulfills my current and future aspirations. My work embodies the envirobiopsychosociospirtual paradigms of man. My aim is not to merely illustrate these factors , but rather to imbue the paint and is visual aesthetics with an ambiance and otherworldliness encombant of the esscence of existance, with particular regard to pushing visual boundaries towards the future. Paintings imposing prescence is a visual catalyst for a purposeful, marked realisation of the ideological representation of the future of mankind. ...

Herman Van Bon - To call him a landscape photographer is akin to describing Table Mountain as a large flat rock. To label him as a graphic artist also leaves much to be desired. A photo-graphic artist Unwieldy and lacklustre. The fact of the matter is that Herman van Bon as a photographer and as an artist is not easily pigeon-holed. Words fall short when describing his work and how he achieves it. In this case, his pictures are more than the sum of their parts. Although a good photographeraEURtms landscapes are far from flat, the observer does, in most cases, get what he or she sees a representation of a country or marine scene. So far, so good. For Herman, however, the capturing of a landscape is just the beginning. It is his playground. He starts to experiment and explore and play, using different kinds of photo-processing and aEUR"developing software and techniques, and, organically, his pictures begin to grow. Layer by layer, the original shot metamorphosises into something extraordinary. Textures, tones, figures, symbols, quirky composites, and what appear figments of the imagination to the eye are included. This process can take weeks. The result is a contemporary, deeply personal ...

Kimmie Hamm - Everywhere you dream to go can become a part of you and everywhere you have been is a part of you. I am an explorer and optimist at heart, so when I set out to create something one word always comes to mind: Possibilities I feel that through art I can explore the visions in my mind, everything from a small flower or blade of grass to distant worlds filled with whimsy and thoughts of what ifaEUR|aEUR|. Culturally I have two aspects that influence me one being my Native American ancestry and the other my German immigrant ancestry. I am deeply rooted in the beauty and wonderment of nature. My wise grandmother told me if you have strong roots your sprit can fly anywhere and still return home. That saying has always stuck with me and in many ways sparked my imagination. The explorer in me must come from my immigrant ancestry. My great grandfatheraEURtms family traveled to America on a steam ship in 1874. I can imagine them traveling for what must have seemed like an eternity. I often contemplate what they must have been thinking, and try to express the excitement of the unknown and the anticipation ...

Wendy Lippincott - Complex allegories dominate the many themes that pervade Ms. Lippincott's paintings. She prefers incorporating science into her art, consistent with her background in electrical engineering, but often gets waylaid with mythological and historical visions. Her paintings are currently only available for licensing. She hopes to have prints available soon. ...

Jerry Di Falco - Photography inspires my visual art and also serves as a key element in the creation of my etchings. The images I employ originate from my own photographs, as well as those my research into the digital archives of universities, historical societies, libraries, museums, and foundations. Upon locating a photographed scene that I wish to translate into etching, I first make several drawings based on that scene. Moreover, using photography allows me to balance documented visuals with my personal interpretations within everyday scenes. I strive to create a convergence between the metaphysical and physical aspects of perceived reality. My etchings attempt to unveil what we mask behind personal assumptions. In other words my scenes unveil what we overlook in the ordinary world. Ironically enough, I blame this failure to notice reality . . . or what I call the phenomena of connectedness . . . on todayaEURtms infatuation with and addiction to the new communicational technologies. My artworks are windows through which people examine the mysteries of human consciousness. In fact, my use of multiple etching plates to create one etched design helps reinforce the illusion of seeing a scene through a window. Each individual area in my multiple-plate etchings becomes a windowpane separated by ...
