Artwork Description:
Station number ELEVEN is entitled, JESUS IS NAILED TO THE CROSS. This wall assemblage was executed in mixed media on stretched canvas. I kept this work minimal to meditate upon the brutality of what it must be like to be nailed to a cross. . . to have long, iron spikes driven through your body to attach it to a tree. The purple painted canvas represents Divinity, and a railroad spike over two conflicting surface textures to convey an exaggeration in height and width. The entire canvas surface was textured to resemble a tree bark, and specialized reflective pigments were used to infuse the work with an eerie shimmer. When the Romans crucified prisoners they would insert the nails between the wrists, being careful not to break veins. This was done to better support the weight of the human. With regard to the feet, one nail was used for each foot and, the feet normally rested on a shelf to help support body weight. My materials included acrylic paint, mica, titanium dioxide, dried ground pigments, metallic thread, found object, copper leaf, wood, and primed canvas.
