Artists Describing Their Art:
Andrew Cain - My work deals with the human condition, emotions and narratives. I find comfort in the figure, as it represents emotions through its movement and shape that explain stories words cannot tell. Each movement and line becomes something abstract, expressive and beautiful. By the juxtaposition of abstract and expressive mark making I narrate my own anxieties in social situations, and turn stories into pieces. I narrate these tales using lines, colour and the figure, explaining everyday situations. I am inspired by perception and how it creates a new narrative within each piece, how every work of art is a conversation between the viewer and the art work....
Grace Ryser - I love figure drawing, portraits and profiles. I also love photorealism and I am just getting into oil paints. In the past I've just done drawings/paintings for myself, often self-portraits, and pictures of my friends. Self-portraits were my concentration for my AP Art portfolio. I heard once that drawing yourself makes you a better artist, I guess it just stuck with me. I also haven't really gotten into the habit of taking photos especially for reference purposes. Therefore, I turn to myself as a subject. But now I'm trying to broaden my horizon as I try to find subject matter that is worth selling. I think I need to fall away from self-portraits a little bit to reach my goal of selling my artwork. ...
John Bonnel - My Statement By John Albert Bonnel The Bent Collector Of One Thousand Limbs I prefer the look of things that are made by hand. I just believe in taking a grassroots approach in everything in life. Music is an inspiration. Artistic, primitive, and important for me to live happy. I try to create a demented form of folk/pop art. Something that has a sense of humor, exposing heart and dysfunction in small town. I create with my hands. I screen print on fabric, I draw and smudge on butcher paper. I carve into linoleum. I cut and paste. I splatter spill and recycle. I use other people's hands. I use telephone poles, t-shirts, album covers and tattoos to display my art. I want to create art that looks like Velvet Underground sounds. I want to show, in each piece, how much I love creating it, with Joe's warts and all. ...
Tracey Datsi Pennell - The Unformed voice becomes greater than the Mind can grasp and there is release in the rigidity of walls. Solid ground breaks in the Fall. From the Decomposition of previously held truths emerges an aesthetic of salvaging the pieces to reconstruct a whole. - T. Datsi ...

Ralph Slatton - I enjoy working with animal imagery. My animals love to wear disguises as they romp throught the mazes and ropes that bind them. They are sometimes unaware of their plight, happily frolicking along in a surreal world of dangers. Each movement implies tighter binds. My animals embrase the attributes given to humans. In fact, they are a kind of stand-in for people and life's events. In one of my intaglios entitled, "Friends," I explore the idea of mobile entrapment, where our prisons move with us. Sometimes my creatures lose limbs, yet compensate with new growth. All the while, my intention is not for sadistism or torture to dominate the concept. Rather, I use these as tools to motivate and narrate the human condition. I explore those cages we create for ourselves and do this in a safe way, by disguising these issues as the icons of the animal world. ...
Glen Viljoen - "Art is the bias essence that prescribes emotional pleasure and displeasure toward all things. In the eye of the beginner there are many stimulants to direct the imagination, to condemn or revere. The tainted eye, mercilessly selective. Art is always permeating, compelling us to learn and to see again. A visual harmonious intuition subtle enough to act upon." ...
