Artwork Description:
This began as a portrait of the incredibly gifted Jazz singer Billie Holiday, born and baptized with the name Eleanora Fagan. This piece became a larger installation piece, surrounded by quotes from the musician s autobiography detailing various instances where she faced prejudice throughout her life for being black, being poor, being a woman, or for having a lighter skin tone. Her experiences spoke to me because I began to realize that I was never taught what it actually looked like during the peak of segregation in America, and I noticed that many of Billie s lived experiences were remarkably similar to my own as a member of the queer community, even though 5 decades separate us.
