Artwork Description:

This mysterious and beautiful work combines the genres of printmaking and painting by enhancing an intaglio and aquatint etching with watercolors and gouache infused with ground mica. The etching is executed on two zinc plates and was developed in several baths of Nitric acid. The artist first created original drawings of the scene, which he adapted from an an archival photograph from The US Library of Congress, Print and Picture Department, Washington, DC. This photo, shot in 1890, depicts the view of San Giogio in Venice, Italy, from the balcony of the Doges Palace. For the etching, Di Falco used the studio techniques of intaglio, drypoint, and aquatint and executed the hand-pulled etching in a blend of deep black inksCharbonnel Brandon RivesBFK white paperboth manufactured in France. The plates each measure eight inches high, or 20.3 cm, by six inches wide, or 15.24 cm. A smallspace exists between the plates, making this diptych-like image about eight inches high by twelve-and-a-quarter inches wide. The print size is eighteen inches long by fifteen inches high. The work was hand printed and published by the artist at The Center for Works on Paper in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
