Artwork Description:
The Manipura chakra, or the third chakra is located above the navel, or slightly below the solar plexus. Manipura is associated with the color yellow, element fire or the Hindu deity ‘Agni’ and the associated planet is sun or the Hindu deity ‘Surya’. Basic function is digestion. Manipura is the“fire in your belly” that motivates you and propels you forward. This chakrais associated with the power of transformation.
Manipura is considered the center of energy and will power, which radiates the healing forcethroughout the entire human body. Just as our digestive system converts food into energy—taking what it needs as fuel and eliminating the rest—Fire’s second face, the destructive face, eats up all the unwanted emotions. Fire is purifying and nourishing, yet destructive. When we connect to our third chakra, the fire in the belly, we connect with our inner power to destroy all negative qualities and emotions.
In my art, the goddess is both nurturing and fierce. Like the sun, she too helps plants grow. Two of her hands are holding fruits and flowers. And like the fire, she destroys evil. Two of her hands are holding a sickle and a beheaded head, signifying end of everything malicious and nefarious. She’s both Laxmigoddess of prosperityand Kaligoddess of destruction. The fire inside her is represented as another weapon wielding goddess who eliminates all negativity and spreads a positive energy throughout the body. The chakra is associated with the animal Ram, which is also the vehicle of the fire God Agni. A Ram is strong willed and lives by instinct and ‘gut feelings.’ It’s a fighter. The ram’s horn was used by soldiers in war to make conches. The sound produced by the conch gave them courage. Since the job of the sun is to vanquish the night and spread light, The sun god ‘Surya’ is depicted in my art riding a horse driven chariot, and obliterating darkness also synonymous with evil in the form of a demon.
