Artwork Description:

SOLD WITHOUT MAT OR FRAME. This etching used two zinc plates placed on the Press table to form one image. Each plate size is six inches high by four inches wide, 15.240cm by 10.160cm, and the overall printed image measures by twelve inches high by four inches wide, 30.480cm by 10.160cm. The unframed etching size, or paper size, is seventeen inches high by 10 inches wide43.180cm by 25.400cm. The artist employed the studio techniques of intaglio, aquatint, and Chine colle, and the media included oil base etching ink on RivesBFK white paper. An eggplant colored mulberry bark paper from Thailand, infused with Japanese kozo threads and treated with methyl cellulose, was used in the Chine colle process, which translates from the French as Chinese Pasting. The ink was blended by the artist and includes gold. The artist photographed this artifact in 1973 while visiting the University of Pennsylvania’s collection archives with Art Historian, David Crownover. The etching shows a visual detail of a Lyre with Bearded Bull s Head and Inlaid Panel found by archaeologists at the Royal Cemetery, Ur, Early Dynastic III, 2550-2450 BC, which was discovered in the tomb of Queen Puabi of Ur, now Muqaiyir in Iraq. The bearded man in the top register stands in twisted perspective between two human headed bulls. Other images include a donkey playing the harp, which is stabilized by a bear as a fox plays the rattle. A Hyena poses as a butcher carrying his meats on a table followed by a lion with jar and vessel. A scorpion man is also pictured. This is a character from the literary epic, Gilgamesh, The Flood Story from Ancient Babylon. The work was hand printed and published by the artist at The Center for Works on Paper in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Please note that this etching is shipped to the collector without a frame or mat. This keeps the price low and affords the collector a choice in framing. A sturdy cardboard box is employed for shipping the work. The etching is first wrapped in two layers of acid free glassine tissue and then placed between two archival boards. This is next placed into the shipping carton and securely packed with bubble wrap. The price includes all handling costs, shipment supplies, and carton. Mailing costs to the collector are added.
