Artwork Description:

ETCHING was created with the techniques of Chine colle, Intaglio, drypoint, and aquatint. THE GREEK CONTEMPLATION is the second in my GLAZED ANTIQUITIES SERIES, a group of prints whose imagery centers on designs from ancient ceramics. My chine colle color overlay was done with vibrant orange mulberry Bark paper, handmade in Thailand, Unryu Brand. My media included a blend of Charbonnel brand oil base ink on Rives FK white paper for this FIRST EDITION of only ten prints. The remaining two editions are limited to only ten prints each and will be executed in the same colors. This image is taken from a painting on the base of an ancient cup and shows Oedipus and the Sphinx, a winged being with the body of a lion and the head of a woman. To rescue the people of Thebes from the Sphnix, Oedipus had to answer her riddle. The Sphinx posed this riddle to any passerby, and she killed and devoured anyone who failed to answer correctly. THE RIDDLE is, I have four legs in the morning, two legs at noon, and three legs in the evening, but I am weakest when I have the most legs. What am I No one was able to solve the riddle until the Greek hero Oedipus provided the correct answer, which is, A human being walks on all fours as a baby, on two legs as an adult, and with a crutch as a third leg when he grows old. Upon hearing Oedipuss answer, the Sphinx killed herself. The print size is 11 inches high by 10 inches wide, or 28 cm x 26 cm. The work was hand printed and published by the artist at The Center for Works on Paper in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Please note that this etching is shipped to the collector without a frame or mat. This keeps the price low and affords a wide selection of choice for the collector with regard to matting and framing. A sturdy cardboard box is employed for shipping the work. The etching is first wrapped in two layers of acid free glassine and then placed between two archival boards. This is next placed into the shipping carton and securely packed with bubble wrap. The Absolute Arts price includes all handling costs, shipment supplies, Certificate of Authenticity, and the shipment carton. Mailing and transportation costs are added to the price.
