  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Debra Cortese - I believe everything on our planet shares a core energy, a vital life force that animates and supports all growth and renewal. In nature, when this energy is balanced and uninhibited by human interference, the flow is smooth, perfection exists. When I am truly in touch with nature, the feelings that I experience are incredibly magical, full of wonder and joy! I create the nature and plant spirit images to share these feelings, and hopefully to evoke similar feelings in viewers and instill a greater respect for the immense value of our natural environment. My visions of the nature energies evolved over many years of personal experience. I was first aware of them as a child playing in the woods and streams of my family home in the Catskill Mountains of New York. In the early 70's I read about the existence of nature spirits at the Findhorn gardens in Scotland. Fascinated by their stories, I began to experiment with communicating with the devas while gardening and hiking in Vermont's Northeast Kingdom. I read voraciously and learned that nature spirits have existed throughout time in almost every culture around the world. I soon realized that my intention was ...

Laurie Pagels - "I have been impressed with the urgency of doing. Knowing is not enough; we must apply. Being willing is not enough; we must do" -- Leonardo DaVinci Today must not be a souvenir of yesterday, and so the struggle is everlasting. Who am I today? What do I see today? How shall I use what I know, and how shall I avoid being victim of what I know? Life is not repetition. (Robert Henri)...

Maria Teresa Fernandes - Admiring Teresa's paintings we are touched by her pictorial sensitivity. Difficult task in light colors (volume and transparencies on a clear basis). Few do it due to the required dedication with pallete knife(no brush). It's painting consacrated by the love to paint. Radha Abramo(Renowned art critique)comments at Solo Exhibition Catalog at SESC Paulista in June 84 -( sent at request and reproduced in one of the pages of this site). ...

Dana Zivanovits - Dana Zivanovits was born in 1958 in Columbus, Ohio and received his art training from the Columbus College of Art and Design (1978 to 1982). After art school, he went abroad for a year and studied the art of the old masters in London, Paris, Madrid, Rome and Venice. Returning to his studio in Columbus to develop these influences into a new body of work, he then traveled to Mexico and studied the sculpture and painting of that country for an extended period. The unique and vivid colors of Palenque and Vera Cruz intensified his palette. After a period in Ohio, he then moved to Venice Beach, California where the brilliant light of the region reinforced his desire to capture effects of sunlight and atmosphere. Returning to Ohio in 1995, he has continued to paint themes deriving inspiration form sources such as world mythology, classic and B-grade cinema, literature and dreams. However his primary inspiration is direct observation from nature, versus an approach based in art theories or cultural critique. Dana has been widely represented by galleries and exhibition projects including Julie Rico and Mega Boom in Los Angeles, the Venice Art Detour, Around the Coyote Festival in Chicago ...

Paul Orzech - Paul Orzech Sculpture Studio Artist Statement: The heart of my artwork is expressed by the words "Classical form with a modern edge." As an artist, I feel the need to incorporate the classic concepts of the human figure from the Ancient Greek and Italian Renaissance periods, with the more message-oriented elements of today's art. My belief in the beauty and power of the raw human form is exquisitely celebrated in the classical forms of sculpture. The modern themes I treat in my art include feminism; contemporary ideas of spirituality and love; and the all consuming presence time plays in our fast-paced American lives. I feel there is a quiet strength in the combination of established classics and contemporary expression that demonstrates a smooth continuity of social history. ...

Smeetha Bhoumik - Greetings! My canvases are melting pots of imagination, existence and personal quests. With paint and it's possibilities of probing inner and outer worlds, I explore my different universes - as a woman, an artist, a professional, a family member, an intrepid traveller, a lost soul, a dreamer believer, a seeker . With the Universe Series I seek to express my complete enchantment with the luminosity, and unending glory of this huge universe and it's magical ways, in some ways finding tenuous connections to the infinite forces that we are a part of . The magic of nearby constellations, far-away galaxies, supreme supernovae, bright young stars, star forming nebulae and their stories have I tried to explore and capture in the 'Universe Series' - conversations on canvas between the viewer, the artist and the unknown. The birth of young stars in regions rich in gas and dust from exploding stars or supernovae, gigantic collisions of galaxies twisting them out of shape temporarily, huge emissions of heavy metals including gold and platinum spat out by supernovae when they burst, the impossibly beautiful colours of dead stars refusing to fade away . Somehow all this enchants and speaks simultaneously of the transient amazing entity that ...

Jennifer E. Miller - Jennifer E. Miller, with a studio in Hillsborough, NC, has spent 25 years exploring and painting the farms, forests and rivers of her area, working in watercolors and oils.i?1/2 Her style is called plein-air, a French term that literally means i?1/2full airi?1/2, and describes an artisti?1/2s representation of effects of atmosphere and light that cannot be observed in the studio. Beverly Furman - Welcome to my exhibit of works in various media and combinations of techniques that I have developed during 40-plus years of making images. My experience with Drawing, Printmaking, Painting: Oils, Acrylics and Watercolor, as well as Oil Pastel, Colored Pencil, Rubberstamping, Inkjet Transfer, Bookworks and Collage has given me a large visual vocabulary with which to express my particular interests and world-view. My work is a response to my immediate surroundings and life events. The effect of humans on Nature, or vice-versa fascinate me. The subject is sometimes less important to me than the visual and emotional impact of the image. Using the immediate and familiar, I seek to create something I have not seen before. Exploring an expanding variety of two-diminsional media has yielded and ever-widening means of expression. My work spans a range from'realism' to'abstract', with expressionist tendencies. Presently, I am interested in combining life experiences and art techniques into evocative images that express my evolving vision in new ways....

Pamela Flynn - My work has always been grounded in issues from living the day to day. I see the visual world as a mirror of human priorities and in much of my work I use digital images from self taken photographs as a starting point. My work is process intense and is meant to initiate an examination of the inherent responsibility that goes with living. My work explores many different issues. Among which are: the use of technology to generate the work, the ability of art to quietly evoke visual memories, the juxtaposition of the uncontrolled and the controlled in living, the blurring of the boundaries between the serious and the trite, the questionable truth of the photo image. ...

Emily Reed - I do oil paintings, calligraphy, designs and art photography. Oil paintings emphasize landscapes, water scenes, flowers, animals, birds, bees, butterflies, and occasional portraits. I tend to paint with the seasons, i.e., in winter I do snow scenes, in fall the leaves turning color, in spring pastel trees and spring flowers, and in summer - brilliancy and lush foliage. Recently, I have progressed to doing more photography and editing photos to add designs. My old Nikon Coolpix 950 has seen better days, so I now have a Nikon Coolpix 8800 which is awesome. I love nature shots, flowers, birds, trees, etc. and as always, cats and kittens. I hope you enjoy my photos. Calligraphy is ancient hand printing done on parchment paper using stylized scripts. The calligraphic prayer, bible verse, poem or saying is decorated with hand drawn designs and pictures using different colored inks. ...

Sue Jacobsen - My "artist's eye" seeks both the extraordinary and the ordinarily-overlooked moments in nature, and presents them in a way that allows the viewer to see what I've seen--and loved enough to want to share it. My regional landscapes, painted in oil, capture the rural flavor of the Wood River Valley in Idaho where I've lived and worked for over 30 years. Previously, California coastal areas were my genre. My love of the ocean and its awesome infinity is equaled in the grandeur and peace of the nearby mountains --again, infinite subjects for my paintings. Just as my professional training in graphic design at Art Center School in Los Angeles served me well when I turned my creative skills to easel painting, this then enabled me to move with ease and enthusiasm when sculpture'found me', and I learned to see with new eyes--in 3 dimensions now! My sculptures are figurative, of people or animals, and I seem to have special ability to capture the likeness and personality of my subjects. While I consider myself to be primarily self-taught, I continue to seek out other professional painters and sculptors whose work I admire, with...
