Pilar Martinez Pimart - Working with memories has been my way to embrace my Dominican identity while living in the United States as I continue to canalize, through mixed media, the convergence of cultures and recollected experiences. These recollections about childhood, family, relationships, food, melodies and transitions are the ones that have shaped my artistic sensibility and are constantly informing my work and its process. This artistic process is spontaneous and intuitive, yet deliberate with a sense of improvisation. The concept "Nothing is wasted, everything is transformed," was instilled in me by my father since my early years and it is a concept in which my art practice is still enveloped. This merging of the new with the old is present in the artwork in the way I collage fragments of scrap paint from my palette, as well as using old records and elements that I collect through the years. Re-using these elements that have a connection to the past, is also for me a way of returning, of going back. Fragmentation becomes an experience of reuniting different memories and elements on the same surface, in a choreographed composition where there's always going to be a suggestion of a continuation or a ...
James Parker - Painting, drawing, and to a lesser degree, photography, have been the driving creative force in my life for the past two years. The changing circumstances of life have allowed this to happen, and for this I am quite grateful. Pin and ink, liquid watercolors, acrylics, and the mixing of mediums are used for these works. My art is somewhere between reality and fantasy, with perhaps a unique style (as all are) which is slowly maturing. Much of my work I try to make light, colorful and fun, and even somewhat premitive with a touch of fantasy. Rustic little cabin scenes, and most seascapes perhaps show this best. Landscapes--mountains, trees, ocean and beach scenes, these are my favorite subjects. I prefer to work quite small. Most paintings and drawings come with wooden 11"X14" frames and hand selected colored mattes. These smaller sized works I have found to be excellent for creating pictures that are both colorful enough and detailed enough to carry an "impact". A few fine art's photographs taken back in the late eighties, some of which were published by a national calendar company in 1989 and 90 are also offered here. Those hundreds of hours looking ...
Peter Tovar - Peter Tovar is a seminal artist in the Chicano Art movement of Los Angeles. He was the founder of"Colores"an on-site gallery boutique at Self Help Graphics in East Los Angeles. He has also designed book covers for authors such as Gary Soto, Aurturo Hernandez and Daniel Sanchez. Peter Tovar was born at Children's Hospital in San Francisco. Second oldest son of five children, Peter grew up in Campbell Calif., a small area outside San Jose. His summers would be spent with his grandmother and cousins in the orchards. When they would break for lunch, his grandmother spun stories about the rich history of Mexico and her eventual journey to California.. " We are the people of the earth, " she would tell them. For Peter the colors of the watermelon symbolize his childhood memories of those cherished summers. In 1964 his family moved to LA where he finished high school. Peter began painting after serving in Vietnam. He continued to paint while working at SHG, and in February 1994, had his first exhibit at Self Help Graphics' Galeria Otra Vez. The exhibit consisted of a series of acrylic painting. Currently Peter lives in the downtown area of Los ...
Laura Docherty - Repetition, pattern and visual sensation are key aspects of my work. I draw with pen and ink onto large surface areas, particularly wood or paper. The drawings cannot be rectified if a mistake is made; therefore precision and concentration are of the utmost importance. I am particularly interested in circles after exploring their possibilities in my recent work. My practice involves taking a simple form and multiplying it to create visually enticing patterns. When I repeat the form and place it in a calculated manner it creates a complex pattern. The eye is unable to focus on one point and results in the viewer concentrating harder. This creates intense visual sensation and once this has been achieved it can lead to a hypnotic state of mind. I also experience a psychological connection with my work during the long and laborious production process. Repeating the same action over and over again with precision on a large scale is a time consuming process; however, finishing a piece is very satisfying. ...
