Artists Describing Their Art:

Alan Soffer - Alan Soffer began studying sculpture and clay in 1973 transitioning to abstract painting in 1985, through a breakthrough program at Bennington College with Sandy Stone. His abstractions have been in the pursuit of the unknown, unique, and personal depths of the unconscious. Rather than confining his energies to a single medium, he sensitively chooses materials that accommodate the concepts at hand. Early constructions were in clay and found objects, then discovering printmaking and photography, which he learned on his own. Finally, focusing on painting with acrylic, oil, and wax. Encaustics allowed him to marry a sculptural component to his painterly approach, following his studies at Ringling School in 1998. The hot, pigmented wax's inherent translucency perfectly supports his vocabulary for expressing space from the microscopic to the galactic. Whatever the direction, the work is always influenced by Joseph Campbell, the noted mythologist, who Soffer considers his mentor. He organized the first national encaustic conference in the US in 2005 and continues teaching encaustic technique as well as abstract painting primarily through workshops. Major one person shows have been presented at: DCCA, Wilmington DE; Borowsky Gallery, Phila.; Rosenfeld Gallery, Phila.; Widener U., Chester PA; Atlantic City Art Center; Robert Roman ...

Charyl Weissbach - Charyl Weissbach www.charylweissbachfineart.com Through the use of abstraction, Charyl Weissbach's encaustic paintings attempt to convey nature's infinite variations of shape, texture, and ethereal beauty. The use of pigmented wax, with its vivid color and translucent properties, is uniquely able to convey nature's vastness and mysterious allure, a significant theme in her compositions. Charyl received a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art with a concentration in painting and art history. She lives and works in Boston. ...

William Dick - STATEMENT My paintings record my interest in reconciling different and often estranged qualities and ideas in painting. I work through an experimental evaluation of the co-influence or confluence of organic and geometric, texture and structure, density and transparency, the sensuous history of paint and the austere tradition of minimalism. Within the context of abstraction, namely geometric and organic, I begin with the fundamental balance in painting between line and colour. I have drawn on ancient symbolic shapes from my Scottish background and I am influenced by the symbolic power of simplest forms of drawn lines such as the circles, concentric circles and spirals of Pictish and Celtic Art. Linear elements in my work derive from this source as well as from African and Aboriginal Art, Abyssinian Warrior Shields and Russian icons, and other lines and shapes that retain, in the broadest sense, some significance within culture. For colour I begin from observation of geological form and the substance of land; of dust, sand, mud and rock as well as the outcrop of local street furniture/ architecture; weather and the effects of weathering, and then of the often extreme and exotic colour of lichen, peat and mosses. My work exploits...

Elizabeth Washburn - Artist Statement: Elizabeth Washburn My paintings are about the color and texture I see in my life. Whether I am painting trees, cityscapes, abstracts or people, I am in love with the way light reflects off forms and the symbolism and mood color can convey. I use an encaustic (hot wax) process that I have developed for myself that blends the traditional encaustic technique with straight oil paint which leads to very interesting surfaces as well as a lot of depth and richness to the color. I have never been tied to any one subject matter. My content is more dependent on what is going on in my life and what I am exposed to. So if I am traveling a lot, one may see the landscape or people I am encountering or if I am alone in my studio for long periods of time the work will tend to be more inward and abstracted. With my painting, I hope to capture my reaction to the experiences in my life in a way that interrelates with people I have never met. ...

Martha Elisa Bojorquez - Martha Elisa Bojorquez comes from Sinaloa, a north western state of Mexico. Since her childhood she has been in love with visual arts and has been dedicated to them for almost one and a half decades noticeably influenced by the incomparable classical and intrinsic elements of Mexican Art. She now focuses her work on contemporary expressionist painting in oil, acrylic and mixed techniques. Her art contains both the figurative and the abstract element and shows an exceptional diversity in combining forms, colors and textures. The artist has been presenting her paintings in numerous personal and group exhibits. She began in Mexico and since 2000 expanding her presence outside her native country to include Canada, Dominican Republic, Italy, Portugal, Spain, the United States, and Venezuela, where there continues to be a growing interest in her work among fine art galleries, museums and art collectors. Martha Elisa now resides in Atlanta, Georgia, USA and continues to create extraordinary work in her new studio nestled in a serene ambience with tight bindings to her native country and thus to the artistic roots which professionally formed her. ...

Lauren Lipinski Eisen - laureneisenart.com My work explores the relationships between landscape, architecture, agriculture the displacement of indigenous species. In my encaustic works, references to each of these subjects are integrated into the surface of the paintings as dimensional collage elements. Branches, reeds, grasses, seeds and other plant materials, as well as processed food items, are embedded into a wax medium to showcase their fragile nature in various stages of plant life, from embryos to post-harvest products processed for mass consumption. Copper, metal wire and mesh underlying and surrounding the paintings suggest a mechanical / industrial presence infiltrating and isolating the natural landscape. This series of mixed media works comments on our consumption of natural resources, utilizing produce and patterns of planting to reference agricultural development of the landscape, and alludes to a variety of interactions between man-made structures and the natural environment: inspiration and imitation, digestion and destruction, cultivation and captivity....

Birgit Huttemann Holz - For me the art of encaustic is the scent of memories and dreams, sweet and eternal. I paint with beeswax mixed with pigments, fuse each layer with fire (blowtorch), even paint sometimes with the destroying hungry flame. I love the physical impact of the blowtorch, the evolving mountains and valleys, possibilities, lost designs in the mixing and melting beeswax. The inner voice - fire is literally the tool. The use of the razorblade is thoughtful, thorough, controlled. Scratching away the layers, to get to the truth of a feeling, to reveal, to find the history of a painting is my greatest joy. Encaustic is known as one of the most difficult mediums to work with. It is constant loss and restauration. It opens routes of seeing you would have never guessed. The beauty of an encaustic paintings lies in its luminosity, transparent layers let you see through the surface- and you bounce back with light and awe. -of an illiterate poet. ...

Heidi Mayfield - I am a mixed media artist. I am always exploring new mediums and new ways to use and apply them. I am currently use encaustic wax as my main medium. Ever since I was a young child watching my artist mother paint with melted crayons and wax I have always been fascinated by wax. In my early artistic years I was seriously devoted to the art of Batik and wax resist. I combine the use of oil paints, oil sticks, acrylic, charcoal, pastel, wire and whatever else that lands in my path into my art. I would best describe myself as a process artist- meaning I am most inspired with the process of creating rather than the end result. I paint in the manner of acting and responding, often with only a vague minimal idea of my artistic destination. Why should I approach art any other way? If I did I would miss all the wonderful and inspiring side roads along the journey. And to me that is what my art is about....the journey. Heidi...

Joyce Pryde - My paintings are inspired by memories of where I was born and places I have travelled. I am an abstract artist and whilst my work appears as if it is arising from impulse the method of making is very influenced by my emotions at the time. ...
