Literati painting also known as ink wash painting was invented in East Asia and the Chinese used black ink to perfection. History suggests that the Shan Shui style existed during the 5th century. It was then further developed during the Tang dynasty and Wang Wei is generally credited to taking this process further by applying color to ink paintings. During the Chinese Song Dynasty to the 13th century ink wash painting was further developed into a more polished style. Ink paint is usually used on Japanese washi paper or Chinese xuan paper. Both are very absorbent to the ink and thus a perfect material. Silk has also been used for some ink wash paintings. Mainly used in China, Korea and Japan this technique has also gained popularity in the Western World and many modern artists use this ancient technique for their artworks.

  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Alison Raimes - Blurred Edges is a multi media project exploring the boundaries of the contemporary perception of reality. Using intriguing and strange images created by photographing hand made models made from everyday materials, the photographs are morphed, manipulated and juxtaposed with the atmospheric, dense drones of sound artist, Red Fog

Valda Fitzpatrick - I believe that art is a reflection of who you are as a person and artist. It is a culmination of ones experiences and exposure to life. Art has always been the heart of my soul. While growing up in Europe, I was exposed to a rich cultural environment. My fascination for flowers, their colors and shapes, trees, the alps, all are echoed in my work. Although abstract in form, the initial concept of my designs stem from reality. For wherever I go ,nature always follows me....

Jack Earley - After writing for two decades, I was developing an idea that I knew could be better expressed as a painting. So in the mid-eighties I took up full-time a life-time passion: painting. My work is about inner energy; about, first of all, my own energy and internal balance, reinforced through the practice of yoga and tai chi. I sign the inner energy of the subject matter onto the canvas. I work with acrylics on canvas and sumi-e inks on rice paper. I also sculpt using wood, copper and leather. Along with focusing on the inner energy of my subject matter, I am constantly working with an awareness that humans have an ancient need to see form, be it in clouds or in chipped paint on a wall or in waving leaves. The ability to decipher forms is part of our oldest survival skills. Imagine the advantage of being able to quickly spot the approaching bear among the shifting shadows of trees. Imagine the advantage and the thrill. On many canvases, I create forms so the viewer "discovers" them in an uplifting act. Often, I give the paint its head in creating forms, like freeing a captured ...

Melita Kraus - Melita Kraus A painter, sculptor and writer was born in Bjelovar in 1954. Ms. Kraus is a member of Croatian Association of Applied Arts. From 1990 she participated in more than one hundred group exhibitions in the country and abroad. From 2010 her sculpture aEURoeTravelersaEUR was accepted by Curators of Museum Yad Vashem, Jerusalem, Israel, to be a part of an international permanent collection in the Museum. As a successor of a family of Holocaust survivors, she is devoted to the revival of themes in intellectually liberated manner, transforming the anxiety of nature and a terror of the theme into a sophisticated material of art, which pure and innocent yet bears an attractive stamp of the mystery of world long forgotten. Some of her finest works are also treasured in the Museum of Contemporary Art in Zagreb, Croatia....

Walther Von Krenner - Before I studied in Asia, Picasso and Gauguin had a great influence on my thinking. Later I admired the ideas and importance of Pollocks action painting. At this point in my journey Liu Kuo Sung, Chang Dai Chien, Fu Baoshi and Zao Wuki artists mostly unknown to the average Westener have had a great influence on my work. I am attempting to synthesize the style and spirit of their work into a new style with the same power, energy and feeling without copying their work or trying to repeat something that has been done already. I believe those artists are the rightful successors of the classic Chinese artists of earlier periods, while the mass of Chinese and Japanese artists have fallen into a endless cycle of repeating and copying the Paintings of the old masters without being able to catch the spirit and power of their role models. In general Chinese and Japanese traditional art has stopped to grow, change and adapt and therefore become lifeless and repetitive copying. The modern artists in those countries that broke loose from this traditionalism have become mere imitators of Western abstract movements like Picasso, Calder, Kline, Polock etc. and have nothing Chinese or ...

Robert Tittle - I like to experiment with different surfaces, such as painting on burlap, I like the challenge of painting clean edges on the rough, bumpy and fuzzy surface. My creations have led some viewers to described them as having characteristics of romanticism. My desire is to stimulate emotions and imaginations, to invoke curiosity in the viewer and create a feeling of being there in the location the painting depicts. I hope my paintings reveal my spiritual character, my faith in God, and the beauty of nature. I have been taught, when an artist puts creativity and spirituality into a painting, they will then have something to leave to the world. ...

Rhoda Taylor - Every day I work in my studio and every day I look forward to creating artwork. Painting is my passion.... I wouldn't know what to do without it. The studio that I work in is situated on the grounds of our house in beautiful Southern Ireland, surrounding me are the mountains with their soft mists, the rolling hills and ancient coastline, it all fills me with happiness and inspiration, I can gaze from my window at the amazing views, the Atlantic ocean, fields, cattle, birds and trees, this truly is a mystical and magical place. Over the years I have worked with various mediums, glass painting, silk screen, oils, pen and ink, gouache and watercolour, but my ultimate choice is my pen and ink work which I truly adore, I know I can put into the paintings a tremendous amount of detail that would be almost impossible using another medium. I am fortunate to of had a lot of my work purchased and exhibited worldwide, England, Ireland, France, Germany, Malta, Hong Kong, Vienna, Japan, and America, with works including Portraiture, Design and Illustration, not to mention the countless private commission requests ranging from transforming memorable photographs into paintings for ...

Radford Thomas - STATEMENT BY RADFORD THOMAS Art is my life and my art is a reflection of all the images, actions, sights, sounds and individuals that I have encountered during my tenure here on this earth. Painting is never approached from a viewpoint of producing a "thing" but instead it is the "thing" that appears as I work. All this means is that, for me, painting is a free flowing, creative process, one that evolves as the art work progresses. In my paintings, the initial implementation of paint tells me what to do and I follow its advice henceforth. ...

Clifford Snyder - I was born in St. Louis Mo. but raised in Washington State near Seattle. Growing up on the shores of Puget Sound under the shadow of Mt. Rainier all of nature was my teacher as it still is today. The son of a sign painter and artist my professional schooling began at young age, while working with my father in his sign shop I had all the material I needed to explore my interest. From my father I learned allot of the tricks of design and spacing as well as some techniques such as serigraphy and gold leafing that I still use today. I attended college in Washington State and received a Bachelors of Fine Arts degree from Central Washington University in 1982. After graduating from college I decided to continue my education through travel. My travels have taken me as far north as Anchorage Alaska to as far south as Morelia, MichoacA!n in Mexico where I lived for a year studying mural painting, sculpture and Spanish and getting to know the people and cultures by working and living among the locals. I love Mexico and have been back to visit for work and pleasure a half a dozen ...
