Artwork Description:

My full title for this complicated etching is, FALLEN POLISH ANGEL IN TRINITY OF EYES AND TEMPLES AND GRAINS OF TIME. I used the studio techniques of aquatint, drypoint, intaglio and Chine colle. This print is from the Third Edition. I blended five oil-based etching inks and printed on RivesBFK white paper from France. Two colors of Thai mulberry bark paper infused with kozo threads was used in the Chine colle process. Five soaks in a Nitric acid bath were required to achieve my final design. I used one zinc plate that measured eight-inches high by ten inches wide, or 20.32cm by 25.40cm to create this work. The print measures 16 inches wide by 15 inches high, or about 40.640cm x 38.100cm. I added several hidden optical illusions and symbols within the clouds and on the ground. The lines and shaded areas of the male figure also contain abstracted forms of mystical symbols. The entire image was inspired by a color photograph taken by Dennis Kovach in the Valley of the Temples, or Vaddi di li Tempri, in Agrigento, Sicily. I created three graphite and ink studies before the etching began. The image shows the Temple of Concordia, along with a contemporary sculpted angel installed there by Polish artist, Igor Mitoraj. This etching is from the THIRD of FOUR editions, and each is limited to only FIVE etchings. Pictured here is the best print, number 1of 5. Please note that this etching is shipped to the buyer without a frame or mat. This keeps the price reasonable and also allows the collector a wide range of choice in framing selection. For shipment, a sturdy cardboard box is employed. The etching is first wrapped in two layers of acid free glassine and then placed between two archival boards. This is next placed into the shipping box and securely packed with bubble wrap. The price does not include any shipment cost. I hand-printed all etchings as part of The Open Studio in Printmaking at The Center for Works on Paper, 705 Christian Street in Philadelphia. Key search words for this etching include sculpture, symbolism, Sicily, optical illusion, chine collé, Sicilia, fallen angel, Agrigento, Igor Mitoraj, Dennis Kovach, Temple of Concordia, and Geometric Design.
