  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Don Dougan - My work comprises both abstracted and figurative imagery executed in a variety of mixed materials, with stone being the predominate medium. Other materials used (usually in conjunction with stone) include foundry cast metals, carved and joined wood, cast and fabricated plastics, cold-worked and kiln-formed glass, cast and carved hydraulic cements, cast/formed paper, welded/fabricated metals, gilding, and found/assembled objects. The more abstracted imagery is worked in pedestal pieces, large freestanding sculptures, and in wall-mounted relief sculptures. The figurative lip series is usually presented in wall-mounted reliefs, deep shadowbox framing, and occasionally as either a pedestal piece or a large freestanding work. The most recently begun series of work comprises pedestal-sized pieces using the imagery of the ship or the boat hull. Each series or each type of work allows me to express aspects of the human condition - the more abstracted works tend to reveal a more universal emotional/rational characterization of subject matter, the lip series tends to allow sensuality, humor, and more visceral expressions, while the ship series delves into personal/cultural memories and emotional journeys. For more images and information on myself, my work, and my working methods please visit my ...

Sal Villano - The inspiration for creating my sculpture grew from a lifetime love of trees. I am in awe of the stately presence and silent majesty they posses. I find the structure of trees to be one of the perfections in nature. With their roots embracing the earth; in winter they show their bones, in spring gentle buds, in summer a canopy of green and in fall a magical kaleidoscope of colors. Beauty, pure beauty. ...

Ali Gallo - Uncovering and bringing to the surface what boils beneath creates the tension necessary for a dialog to begin between the idea and the artist and/or the art and the viewer. Finding anyway to create this tension, gouging, scratching, laying, etc in a painting or sculpture allows for deeper inspection, providing the incredible power of metaphor for the human condition....

Penko Platikanov - Sculpture is an act of creating art, and a philosophy on living. It is my belief that my artwork follows some means of a universal law I call "Creation and Beauty." Stated simply, there is no doubt a responsibility inherent toward created forms. It's quality, it's energy, and the messages released through my actions are expressions that I work toward being aware of. This is the first thing I concern myself with before I step into my studio and stand before the set block of clay on any given day. A quality sculpture has to be a product of spiritual, mental and technical abilities. Great works of art should possess deep roots in human spirituality, as well as depth regarding thought and feeling. Artwork can appear as fleeting inspirations or a belabored process based on the experience of the artist. In turn, if an artwork is created with the intention of lasting decades and being viewed for many generations, it has to be technologically strong and skillfully made. Important thought is the search for quality. Quality, which is proportional to the amount of effort, must be made to the best of the artist's ability. The Ancient Greeks ...

Grzegorz Luszczyk - Grzegorz Luszczyk belongs to a small group of artists fascinated in leather as an artistic material, in its facture, plasticity and other attributes. Though it has accompanied man since the dawn of history, in contemporary art has been used since not long ago. He also designs and makes statuettes, signboards and gadgets using colour metals, stainless steel together with marble, stone, leather and other materials. The state-of-art techniques like laser and water stream cutting out or powder painting have been used in manufacturing process. Grzegorz Luszczyk's emotional comprehension of art reflects in his works and in permanent searching for artistic material. First, there was metal, next leather, later canvas and paints. Now, there is metal once more but together with stone and plastic. Problems with identity? Rather consequence in penetrating of new artistic expression areas. In his 20 years lasting adventure with art he has tried his hand at different fields. He shaped metal, formed leather, painted, designed small objects... He presented his achievements on 17 exhibitions in Warsaw, Gdansk, Moscow, Madrid and other towns. His works are present in numerous collections in Poland, West Europe, Japan and in the USA. ...

Selin Melek Aktan - God created world from fire and water. Then looked at the earth,he thought it was looking very empty and made human. TO HAVE A MORE FUN He put the colours on his palette and painted world with them. HE GAVE US THIS EARTH AS A PRESENT Human liked his present and they started to dance GOD LOOKED AT HIS ART He enjoyed what he did. I am a very independent person and probably my paintings are too. I don't paint because of the trend, or mode, I paint because something or somebody fascinates me. It could be nature, a face, a story, an event, colors (especially, I adore strong colors ), a song, an object, my feelings, my thoughts, my dreams: never ending possibilities of improbability. I definitely love beauty. I am trying to express my personal sense of beauty and truth in my paintings. So every painting is different. There is not only one style in which I like to work .I traveled to the four corners of the earth, and each place I visited added to my desire for unique artistic expression.Wherever I went, I found new influences directing my brush strokes or guiding my hands ...

Mark Dedrie - Mark Dedrie, an artist in motion by Robin d'Arcy Shillcock The first things you notice when confronted by work of Belgian sculptor Mark Dedrie (1962) are the stylized shapes and their highly polished finish. Although working within the tradition in which colour is omitted in favour of form, his approach is not so much classical an literal as turning a refined distillation of visual reality into a sculptural statement. He transforms a world of colour and movement into a world of presences, of volumes and elegant lines, and manages weightlessness in heavy bronze. This results in tactile, visually attractive sculptures. There aren't too many sculptors who know how to stylize animal shapes well, and even fewer that seek the degree of refinement Dedrie is striving for. It results in soft and sensual surfaces that underline the exquisite grace of birds like ducks and long-legged waders. There are honestly merely a few I can name. Francois Pompon (France 1855-1933) worked on Rodin's marble sculptures before becoming one of the greatest animal sculptors of the modern era. His work instigated what I call the Movement of Form, comprising the sculptors who preferred to distance themselves from ...

Christopher Stone - ~Christopher Stone. I think it's important to stay true to your vision, when you are creating a piece of art or any other work. It's too easy to lose yourself and your identity if you only care about what others may think of you and your work. By sticking to your vision, you will feel more accomplished and proud of your work, even if it's harder to get recognition. It is important to remember why you decided to become an artist or create. If you do things just for monetary gratification sooner or later you will feel lost and lose the thrill of your creativity....

Beatriz Cunha - The creation of my pieces starts with the observation of the complex relations established between phenomena as diverse as nature's fertility, man made objects or art history. It's an intimate work in search of integrating conflicting forces, ultimately leading to the transmutation of the parts in to a transcending whole. The shape contains in it self the memory of the evolution from one condition to another in a process of transformation that is at the same time natural, personal and cultural. ...

Mrs. Mathew Sumich - Mathew Sumich passed away in late 2012. His work is available through Judith Sumich or the Michael H. Lord Gallery, Palm Springs, CA. The following statement is in his own words The focus of my work - whether non-commissioned or commissioned - is to work with basic elements such as line, form, color, texture, etc., and to apply them to the principles of design, e.g., dealing with proportion, subordination, rhythm, balance, opposition, transition, harmony and contour continuation, and to deal with different media, e.g., steel, glass, paint, wood, cement, etc., and to find potential uses of the media, taking into consideration its use in the environment in which it is to be located. My interests have always been with line and plane i?1/2 the first elements of drawing. Line creates plane, plane creates depth, plane can advance or recede by the use of color. My art is fundamental, basic, simple design principles in action. Using structural design principles and having a good understanding of the environment, I am able to take any media i?1/2 steel, glass, wood, clay, canvas i?1/2 and create 2-dimensional, 3-dimensional, or 4 dimensional adding the dimension of time objects. The final form, be it a painting, ...

Lou Lalli - The shaping and use of stone is a vital part of the human endeavor. The fashioning of tools and implements by stone age peoples, the votive Venus figures of the Neolithic period, cycladic sculpture of the eighth millennium BC, classical sculpture of Greece and Egypt and all the sculpture to the present indicates that stone sculpture is intrinsic to human expression. Sculpting in stone directly links me to the people of the past. The subject and ideas I choose are derived from the past thus strengthening that link. The resolutions of the technical problems are the same that sculptors in the past confronted and solved. Although modern tools and implements facilitate my work I am still doing what all sculptors and stone carvers have done in the past; chipping, abrading and polishing the stone to release the form contained therein. My ideas and subjects are borrowed from antiquity with each piece telling a story. Antiquity provides a wealth of resources for my work; warriors, the myths, Venus figures, beasts, demigods and shaman/priests are the subjects I appropriate. In executing an idea, the importance of light and shadow, through the use of negative space is a primary concern in the ...
