Artists Describing Their Art:
Jerry Sauls - As I see it, the challenge to me as an artist, is not only to paint nature in all her glory and diversity, but also to capture the emotion a scene evokes and incorporate that emotion into the mixing of paint on my palette and into my brushstrokes as the paint is applied to the canvas. Detail, color and texture are as important to my work, as light and the elements are to nature. When planning a new work of art, I like to think about something I have experienced, and how the image can be influenced by natural elements like light and weather. Often, I will begin working with a particular image in my mind, and as I progress, wonderful things seem to happen, transforming my visual image as it is passed onto the canvas. As a result, the completed work is sometimes very different from my original vision. ...
Debra Bretton Robinson - Debra Bretton Robinson Artist Statement: My paintings are inspired by the beauty and complexity of landscape forms both real and imagined. I use the subject of landscape to explore the edge between abstraction and representation with an emphasis on the expressive use of color. I believe color is the soul of a painting, often reflecting the tension between what is known and what is felt. Like the Abstract Expressionists, I am inspired by the act of painting itself and by the sensual articulation of color and form. I prefer acrylics and collage because of their potential for flat shapes and washes of color. When painting, I weave thin outlines around graphic shapes in a gestural bravado, drawing from a palette of uninhibited colors. In the end, my paintings are a symphonic consonance of lustrous hues and expressive forms; a harmony of abstract marks and recognizable imagery. I paint in my studio as well as in the field, the scale of my work ranging from small studies to much larger canvases. The Fauves, as well as The Seven, have played important roles in the development of my style. Favorite artists include Henri Matisse, William Henry Johnson, Tommy Thompson, Lawren Harris, Fairfield ...
David Welsh - David Welsh was born in Derbyshire (1937), and educated at Eton and King's College, Cambridge. Now retired, his main career has been as a teacher, but painting has never been far behind, especially in the last ten years. He enjoys portrait painting as well as landscape work where his specialities are the effect of light, often on water, and interesting and dramatic clouds and skies. He has always worked in oils, a medium that he finds very suitable for all the effects he wants to achieve. He has been much influenced by a group of contemporary English artists, who are not Avant-garde, but rather proceed from the Impressionist tradition. He admires, among others, artists like Roy Petley, Fred Cuming, Ken Howard and Bernard Dunstan. ...

Pham Kien Giang - Please patiently listen to! People often say the artists paint by their eyes, but I - myself do not understand why I paint by my ears. I often sit alone, close my eyes and listen to the sound from the life, from the memory, listen to the echo from somewhere "The wind from somewhere is same to the echo of time immemorial My way I am walking has imprinted a lot of the people . The blades of grass, foot of the trees are quivering as talking together The rustle of the storks in the sky is same to calling for the freedom " Suddenly, I am aware of something which . Jerry Ross - Manifesto of American Verismo By Jerry Ross, 2012 "American verismo", a movement that I have recently founded, is a catch-all phrase for an artistic style that draws its main inspiration from Italian art, both classical and modern. There is an implied nostalgia for work done "dal vero" (after life) whether classical (Raphael, Rubens, or Caravaggio, etc.) or 19th century (the Tuscan I Macchiaioli school) or more contemporary. Verismo is somewhat akin to contemporary "atelier realism" but the latter has been criticized for an academic uniformity and its over attention to details. American verismo is more poetic and linked to post-impressionism, the Milan-based Scapigliatura ('wild hair') movement, and the I Machiaioli's commitment to social issues. But like atelier realism, American verismo is associated with a painterly sketching style, use of broad brushstrokes, and the alla prima, "direct attack" technique of painting. It is also linked to all'aperto (open air) impressionist-style landscape painting. In short, to pleinairism which has become widely popular in recent years. I first introduced the term during several classes he taught at the Maude Kerns Art Center in Eugene and then later at the "Angels Fight Road Art Center" plein air retreat...
Steven Fleit - I am a self taught artist. I have been painting for over twenty years and approximately four years ago I declared myself an Artist in the professional sense. Prior to my declaration as an artist, I built a portfolio of thematic collections. I started with Caribbean tropical paintings. I have expanded my subject matter to, Vineyard, architectural reflection, and travel sight e.g. Venice Series paintings. When I felt that I had put together a substative portfolio, I identified as an artist. I am serious about my craft and I hope you enjoy viewing my work. Thank you....
Lou Armentrout - LIFE WAS SIMPLER THERE, in the little Ohio village of Hanover in Licking County, where Lou Armentrout was raised. Swimming in the river, roaming the green hills of Ohio, Lou fell in love with nature; from the beginning its beauty was his passion. Capturing it in art has been his life long quest. Getting a B.F.A. in art education from Ohio U. in 1971 and a M.F.A. from Ohio State U. in art education in 1977 taught him a great deal, but not about painting nature. As a teacher for thirty-five years, he nurtured his students' love of beauty. In addition he taught himself by collecting. Amassing hundreds of paintings (mostly historic Ohio Impressionists), he found in their content, some of the unspoiled beauty of his youth. From their style, he has formed his own: one filled with light and color. When he moved to California, he fell in love all over again but more. His love expanded when he became a docent at the Palm Springs Art Museum. California is GOLDEN in so many different ways! His happy heart is flourishing in the brightness; his paintings are becoming even richer in color, radiant with ...

By the way I am not a workaholic as I don't consider what I do work. I enjoy life too much. I forgot to say I am also a weight lifter as lifting weights is my Zen. When I am troubled the concentration it takes to lift makes me calm. I guess my page will probably be a little different from what people expect. Sorry I have not been uploading new work as ...
Corrie Ancone - Artist statement : "I don't care for the certainty of what's in front of my lens, but the creativity, the fantasy, the invention, that can gush from a thought before or thereafter. Between the certain and the uncertain there is a possible space, as in dreams and fables. Heavily influenced by mythology, nature and the techniques and working styles of the early European Dadaists, Impressionists and Baroque artists, my creativity stems from my lust for finding and exploring sympathies between the human body, the landscape and its textures. Oscillating between transparency and opacity, colours and images collide in my work, creating new visual and emotional images, often painterly and somewhat surreal, which affect perceptions of natural reality. This is sometimes described as 'synthetic realism'." Corrie Ancone ...
