  • Artists Describing Their Art:

Marko Janicki - Instead of speaking about my art in general, I would rather concentrate on a few important issues, the ones I see as biggest threats to a proper understanding of my work. 1) SUBJECT. After presentations of my work I often hear questions: "What does this painting mean?" or "What do you want to say with this painting?" Well, I would like to give a clear answer: nothing. Or, rather, nothing that can be expressed in words. Visual art is beyond the world of words and ideas. Like music or dance, it has its own ways of expressing. I think that people who attempt to use their art as a way of nearly verbal communication should write a book instead. My paintings are here to please your eyes, not to provoke your brain activity. Expressing big ideas is domain of esthetically unimaginative persons. I gave up the originality of ideas for the originality of composition, colours and lines, which represent my personality very well. 2) STYLE. I work in the style of "alla prima", which means I am not covering the cardboard with infinite layers of paint, but rather trying to include the background and structure of the cardboard in the ...

Sangeeta Singh - Sangeeta Singh I am an art nomad. Traveling and exploring styles, mediums, themes and techniques - both traditional and contemporary. Combining intuition and technique, I seek to create a sublime fusion of thought and medium. My colors are rich, always luminous.Intense.Striking. For me art is a celebration of life and an inward journey of growth and awakening. I have been a professional artist for the past 20+ years. I have completed and commissioned over a thousand paintings for clients across India, UK, Canada, France and the US. The paintings are in various styles-both traditional and contemporary and represent multiple mediums that I have worked with. I have experimented with great success with mixing traditional tools and techniques with contemporary mediums (painting with vegetable dyes & natural substances on Cedar wood), frescos on cement walls, Charcoal on canvas, painting with leather batik, Etching and painting on metal foils, brushed steel laminate, and glass. Overview of my art education and training * Studied Fine Art at the College of Fine Arts and Architecture at Hyderabad, India * Diploma in Ceramics from LS Raheja College of Art, Mumbai * Studied "Patachitra", the traditional art of Orissa for 3 years with the help of a "guru" ...

Maxim Bondarenko - All indifferently, as if colouring everything around with my vision, like the Kazakh akyn whose song is about everything that he sees at the moment of singing. It seems that when I have painted a certain number of objects, the space of my dreams will break through into this universe, take it over, filling everything with its own realities, imposing its own laws. The world will change, but not in abstract way a-la'Beauty will save the world', but genuinely. And you should not expect this new world to be calm. ...

Leyla Munteanu - ARTIST'S STATEMENT Leyla Munteanu I have always felt a special connection with textural surfaces and the human figure. The beauty and strength in human features was a preferred subject in my work. Now I am focusing on the nostalgic. My love for the human figure has evolved into an interest in what they leave behind. Human marks left on objects and surfaces over time become more important than representation of the people who made the marks. I find my inspiration in immediate surroundings, and I hope that my work will lead the viewer to see the beauty that I see. First impressions are everything. Most often my depictions of those experiences are simply my way of saying "you should see what I saw!" Each piece has special meaning to me, which will not necessarily be the same meaning the viewer may attach to it. Art tells us something about ourselves and my work is the world as I see it, a world that brings back memories. I grew up in Bucharest Romania, a town marked by a long history; every place was worn by time or human nature. I'm still amazed by my memories of these places. All ...

Debra Ann Reilly - At age 5 in kindergarten Debra loved painting so much she created a life size self-portrait wearing a bright orange smock, holding a huge palette in one hand a giant paintbrush in the other. During the mid-70s she attended painting lessons from a local artist with two other students in his Queens, NY gallery. Debra continued art studies in high school and in college. Debra created in pastel, digital, pencil, ink and acrylic paint. Debras work has been viewed coast-to-coast. Now Debra has a collection of mostly impressionist art coming soon, many were created during the covid shutdown. Some at other times. All are doen in oil paint and will be very exciting to see, somewhere in NYC area this year. ...

Veronica Shimanovskaya - Shimanovskaya's work is concerned with the interplay of materials, shapes and colours orchestrated into harmonies informed by personal experiences. Aspiring to simultaneously explore the poetry and semantics of the visible world, she is convinced that the the viewer will make his or her own connections. ...

Susan Barnes - Since childhood, art has been a large and defining part of the person I have become and strongly influences the way in which I view the world around me. Having an artist grandmother, with a home studio, made it seem so natural a part of daily life. Hopefully this love of art will continue to be passed down through future generations. Painting is my passion. Although I am a representational artist, painting mainly in oils, my interest is not in copying a subject in a photorealistic way but rather to create something that is sensed on an emotional level in addition to what is seen with the eye. I paint both en plein air, which is both an exhilarating and challenging experience that feeds my soul, and in my Medford studio. Moving paint around is what it is all about, placing one piece of color against another to create that atmospheric effect and convey a mood. That's the mystery and illusion of painting. What attracts me are scenes infused with mood and atmosphere. There is no shortage of either along the coastal areas. Having spent summers for most of my life along the New Jersey shore has given me ...

Jeanie Merila - Art surrounds my life like a blanket, filling my senses with joy and giving me a place to weep with color. Sometimes art is a mirror of my life, but other times it is what remains after life filters through my vision. My art is about color and light. The way light bounces off buildings in the afternoon sun, shadows flickering like transforming clouds. The colors vibrate next to each other, the patterns of leaves and bricks create harmony. The wavering reflections in windows, puddles and canals continue to fascinate me - sky and water become one. I have painted flowers over and over for 20 years, yet the pure hues continue to blend and dance in my watercolors like newborns. The silence of the ocean as I swim below the surface inspires me. The waves above leave twisting shadows on the progressing, swirling sand. The rainbow fish darting among the coral remind me of insects hovering around thriving buds as I gaze into the mystery of the deep azure, waiting for the turtle, manta or shark. The breath of my soul is often revealed through the mystical depths of the ocean or the burst of color on a fragrant bloom. ...

Timothy King - ARTIST STATEMENT and BIOGRAPHY STATEMENT I find painting goes beyond the notion that painted reality is "nothing but " a precursor to a photographic realism. Painting is a phenomenological experiment. There is a synthesis between the visual and the kinesthetic that forms a powerful third range of human perception. Human space and form are not purely optical manifestations. The painting of mass and line can provoke a muscle sense, a physical ness between viewer and the painted relationships. Hans Hoffman called this "Push-Pull". Matisse referred to this as the convexity of pictorial space. In this "meta-vision" or "minds-eye" the painter is not freed from the experience of perspective and local color and the naturalistic geometry of the objects and scenes. Rather, the painter can be liberated by the experience and knowledge of the defining aspects of human reality. Vision encompasses the obvious factors of sight along with other less obvious paths to sensing reality. Human vision is based on a plasticity of structures that tell us more than what a photograph can convey. The visual system, governed by layers of logical relationships, goes much further than a photo interpretation of reality. Painters like Courbet and Cezanne understood ...

Roderick Brown - Roderick (Rod) Brown was born in Western Australia. Rod spent his first 30 years in an arid and remote gold mining town. As a youngster he remembers the great freedom he enjoyed surrounded by the stark but vivid images of the mines and surrounding bush, which he regularly explored. Rod as a child watched his father paint in oils and sketch, in charcoal and ink, portraits of local identities. The early seeds to later pursue art were sown at this time. Rod has enjoyed living with his family in Australia, Europe and the USA. During this time he has visited over 40 countries around the world enriching his life and building on the foundations acquired in his hometown, which was a very multicultural society. Rod decided to explore his artistic leanings taking up oil painting while living in Sydney. At that time Rod was a member of the Castle Hill Art Society and The Hornsby Art Society. Rod took up watercolour painting in the early 1980's, which has been his preferred medium since. Rod has exhibited at many public shows particularly while living in Sydney and has over the years painted commissioned portraits. Rod has paintings in corporate and ...

Valeriy Mavlo - Valeriy Mavlo was born in Kiev (Ukraine) in 1962. He started a career at an early age. Valeriy Mavlo entered and later graduated from the Academy of Art in Kiev (Ukraine) where he created a lot of art works that have been exhibited on the art shows in Ukraine and others countries. From 1996 and at the present time he lives and creates new art works in Boston, MA. ...

Ken Smith - The ongoing theme of my work is the recognition of natural forces, shapes, gestures. When I choose my subjects to work with I feel a sense of belonging to those innate forms I know them as my own destiny. It is satisfying for me to attempt to identify the most basic truths, that are common denominators of life's dynamic both in humans and in the rest of the natural world. My role as an artist is to say, "Look at this it is what I feel is true do you feel it also?" My creative life began as a freelance writer, and a commercial and editorial photographer. Since 1991, I've been concentrating on the fine art side of the work, and for the past eight years I've been working primarily in still life. Most of my work is split-toned black & white silver prints, although I sometimes handcolor the work. Recently my work has evolved towards color, and printing with archival pigment ink on fine papers. This change has imbued me with exciting new possibilities for creative expression and presentation. My work has been exhibited in international venues is in corporate and private collections in the United...

Dorothy Nuckolls - I am a self taught artist. I have been painting for about 30 years. My love of art began as a child. The awesome beauty of nature and the magic of color always intrigued me. To reproduce God's art; wheather it be outdoor sences, or portairts; has always been a goal for me. I started doing portairts in 2002 and realize that, that was what I really loved to do.Now I specialize mostly in portairts. I hope you enjoy my collection as much as I enjoyed painting it. Dorothy Nuckolls...

Peter Lembrechts - As You may have noticed by looking at the examples of my work on the right, I like drawing and painting in a realistic way, but most of my paintings have that surreal touch to it (maybe that's some kind of a "Belgian gene" ?) I was born in 1960, and studied Latin, Mechanics and finally ended up in Art School, because drawing and dreaming was the main thing I was always doing during my school years... (hope my daughters never read this!) Since I do love machines also, I started to work in a garage as a panelbeater after leaving school, doing a lot of sculptural work... Having seen a lot of rusty oldtimers, I wanted to paint those beautiful colours that make a carwreck unattractive to most people. You can find some examples of these on my website (
